Class Experience
Do you have a student who learns especially well by seeing something worked out for them? Maybe your learner needs hands on practice for a concept to stick. If so, this is the class for you! There is plenty of demonstration by the teacher and student involvement via the Outschool classroom in this FLEX class. We will briefly review subjects, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions as we learn to diagram sentences. Our focus will be on diagramming, so students will benefit from already being familiar with identifying subjects, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions. However, mastery of this is not a prerequisite. Many students wonder why learning to diagram sentences is important. I get it! Why spend our time on something that doesn't matter? Diagramming is important because it helps us to better understand the structure of our English language and guides us to improve our speaking and writing. There are no live meetings for this class. Each week's pre-recorded video will contain a short explanation of the parts of speech we will be working with, and several demonstrations of how to diagram them. Students are encouraged to watch and even re-watch the videos for reinforcement of the concepts presented each week. For every class, Ms Katie will upload homework for the student to do in order to practice and master the skills of diagramming. After completing each homework assignment, students will upload a picture of their diagrammed sentences to the Outschool classroom. Ms. Katie will respond to each with encouragement and any necessary corrections. Interaction between students is also a bonus of this class! As part of their homework, students will each upload one sentence per week for their fellow classmates to diagram. What fun to share our ideas and interests! These sentences are to follow the format and sentence structure that was presented in that week's video. Ms. Katie will give examples of these at the end of each video. Open communication is very important for FLEX classes! Students are encouraged to contact Ms. Katie as needed with any questions or to get clarification for any specific problem. Schedule: Week 1: Subjects, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs Week 2: Subjects, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and direct objects Week 3: Subjects, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, direct objects, and prepositional phrases Week 4: Subjects, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, direct objects, indirect objects, and prepositional phrases In addition, we will touch on diagramming articles and objects of the prepositions, although it will not be our main focus.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to identify and correctly use subjects, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions. By learning to diagram sentences, the students will better know how these parts of speech are used in speaking and writing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Pensacola Christian College
Hello! I'm delighted that you are interested in this grammar class! I have a degree in secondary education and have enjoyed teaching English for grades 1-11. For the past eight years, I have homeschooled my own children. This has included walking them though these same concepts of learning the parts of speech, recognizing their functions in sentences, and using them correctly in speech and writing. I know you'll understand these concepts quickly also, as we systematically go through the steps of learning to diagram sentences. Thank you!!
-Ms. Katie
