I will present the life and work of Frida Kahlo with a throughline of learners creating their own self portrait inspired by Frida's artistic process as we go. She often said her self-portraits were not who she was in that moment, but who she was becoming. Learners will be encouraged to tap into that aspirational headspace while creating their art. Art will be presented as a small way to create the type of world you want to live in and the type of person you hope to become. Frida Kahlo did not have an easy life. I will present this in an age appropriate manner with the focus being how she derived strength from these events and how she used it in her art. We will learn about the rebellious spirit of this feminist icon and how she was proud of who she was and incorporated her "flaws" - mustache, unibrow, scars etc. - into her art work. After taking this class I hope learners are able to look at - and engage with - art in a deeper way, use art as a way to understand and manage emotions (or simply escape or reflect) and, just maybe, after learning about the rebelliousness Frida felt in her adolescent years have a new role model. I will end by introducing some fun arts and crafts inspired by Frida that learners can do on their own or with some help from an adult. Terms / vocabulary that will be defined and presented: Surrealism Magical Realism Indigenous Mexican Culture Feminist
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Xavier University
I have a a bachelor's degree and credential to teach high school, a Master of Education degree, and when I taught Montessori art appreciation and creation was always part of my classroom. . This type of art has been a life long hobby/passion of mine - I have personally attended Kahlo exhibits and have read several biographies. I plan to use the skills I have in teaching and my knowledge of the subject matter to create an interesting and engaging class!
