Description
Class Experience
During each class I will present a topic needed to be a great reader. We will then go over short passages and practice using that technique. A variety of sources will be used to practice reading comprehension - informational texts, workplace and community-based documents, general fiction, opinion based texts, and non-fiction aligned with science and social studies curriculums for this age group. Students will be assessed on their comprehension of the reading passages by answering questions...
After students complete these lessons they will be better equipped to apply the following to their reading: • Analyze relationships within passages, including how people, events, and ideas are connected • Put events in order • Make inferences or draw conclusions about plots, sequence of events, characters, settings, and ideas in passages • Determine the relationship between ideas • Analyze how details develop the main idea • Identify the author's point of view and purpose • Determine how the author explains a position and responds to different viewpoints • Infer the author's purpose in the passage when it is not stated
I have a B.A. in literature (and credential to teach high school English), Master's in Education and have taught many English classes as part of the faculty at a community college.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
