Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
In this semi-introductory course, students will learn a variety of mathematical concepts over the course of 20 sessions. During this time, they will work on the following skills per week (with supplemental practice provided):

Session 1- Factors & Multiples (including prime factorization, and prime and composite numbers)
Session 2- Patterns (expressions and patterns)
Session 3- Ratio (review and discuss identifying equivalent ratios)
Session 4- Ratio and Unit Rate
Session 5- Percents
Session 6- Exponents (including whole numbers, powers of ten, negative exponents, and scientific notation)
Session 7- Order of operations (with exponents and integers)
Session 8- Expressions (introduction with key vocabulary and solving when known variables)
Session 9- Variables (distributive property and evaluating variables)
Session 10- Equations (one step)
Session 11- Equations (inequalities and variable relationships)
Session 12- Percent and rational number
Session 13- Proportional Relationships (including finding missing numbers)
Session 14- Graphing proportional relationships (including constant of proportionality)
Session 15-Two-step equations
Session 16-One and Two-step inequalities
Session 17- Multi-step equations
Session 18- Two step equations and slope (including finding slope and x- and y- intercepts)
Session 19- Functions and Linear Models
Session 20- Systems of Equations

At the end of each unit, students will provided access to a virtual quiz through Google Forms for review of concepts as well as a review game from Kahoot to practice prior to the quiz. These quizzes may be used for academic grading purposes or enrichment. In addition, students will receive daily questions in the classroom to practice solving, as well as receive weekly practice to complete independently.

During each class, I will introduce the topic, and provide step by step practice to learn how to solve the problem using standard algorithm (students may use other methods previously learned and will be supported in those, however for the purposes of the class for instruction standard algorithm will be utilized). Several practice problems will be presented, with opportunities to pause the video to permit students a chance to work through and solve as they learn/review the concept of the week.

Students will also have Khan Academy pages made for them (no previous account needed) and have assignments issued to review content learned for each week (this is not required, but is being provided as an additional enrichment).

Private tutoring is also available upon request for additional support in this concept.

I have taught for several years and served as a private mathematics tutor and home-bound instructor for over 6 years. I have taught elementary math, middle school math, as well as review classes, unit classes, and private tutored in mathematics on Outschool since January 2019. I have worked with various students from various backgrounds to help them master mathematics for over 10 years as a teacher, meeting the needs of various learning styles and needs. I am very familiar with digital learning and how to work with students online, including interactions and helping students understand material. I also integrate review for students to practice to show me how they are progressing. I stay on after the session ends if students need a bit more review, and offer tutoring to assist.
