Class Experience

This course is designed to introduce children to the treble clef staff and start them on their way to becoming fluent note readers. It is so important that music students learn note reading early on as it is one of the main building blocks in music education.

This small group class allows students to interact with each other as well as myself in a fun and relaxed manner. We play games and complete worksheets on screen. Class is structured in a way that questions are always welcome.

Week 1 - We will be introduced to the staff and treble clef. We will draw a treble clef and discover how many lines and spaces a staff has. Some students may have already seen music notation. They will have an opportunity to tell the class where they have seen or used these symbols before. I will also briefly explain which instruments use the treble clef staff.
Week 2 - We now know that notes "live" on the lines and in the spaces, so we will learn the names of the space notes. Note naming games will help us remember letter names.
Week 3 - We will cover the names of the notes on the lines. Again, we will use games (felt board and worksheets) to reinforce what we have learned.
Week 4 - We will start with a full review. We will then name notes using various worksheets that spell words and make stories.

Learning Goals

Students will learn about the treble clef staff and become familiar with notes from middle C up to high F.

In my years of teaching music, I have come to develop fun and engaging ways for students to learn how to read notes on a staff. Note reading is tremendously important when it comes to learning how to play a musical instrument. When a student is able to read with confidence, they can focus on the instrument and their technique.
