Class Experience

Let's play the most popular fantasy role playing game of all time, Dungeons & Dragons!

This character creation workshop and campaign is for younger kids who have no experience or limited experience with Dungeons & Dragons and role-playing games in general. In this class learners from 7 to 10 will use a simplified version of the Dungeons & Dragons rules to create an original character. We will then take the characters on quests to prove how brave and valiant they are!

This class will be highly interactive. We will begin with a short overview of what a role playing game is, and what sets it apart from other games. Using decision making and cost/benefit evaluations, we will decide upon and create characters.

In our first class we will create our own Dungeons & Dragons characters. We will be strengthening our math, writing, and decision making skills as we decide on what sort of character we'd like to play.

In the following meetings we will take our brand new characters through some short quests. These adventures will give the characters to learn more about the game as well as use their hero's special abilities.

Besides working on math, reading, and verbal skills, role playing games give us a chance to learn skills like team work, creative problem solving, and communication skills. We will also learn that actions have consequences, so choices that the players make will effect the game.
Learning Goals
Role playing games are excellent ways to work on math and reading skills. They can also help strengthen team work, creative problem solving, leadership, and communication skills. Creating a character can also help learners with decision making skills and cost/benefit evaluations. Of course, it is a great way to stimulate creativity and imagination!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I'm Ed!

I'm so happy to be teaching on Outschool!

I'm a professional puppeteer, a gamer, and a home school dad!

During my career as a puppeteer I've performed with the Muppets, the Jim Henson Company, and Sesame Street among others. I've been a puppeteer on feature films, tv shows, and videos throughout my 30+ year career. I have toured internationally with Walking with Dinosaurs-the Arena Spectacular for the past 11 years. Currently I own a company that tours throughout the Southeast.

As a home school dad I helped teach my son his entire school career.

I'm a huge fan of games, especially role-playing games! Playing a role playing game can improve skills like math, reading, comprehension, team work, and creative problem solving.

Students learn better when they are in an environment where they want to learn. Using puppetry and games, I've been able to educate students of all ages on a variety of topics. In fact, puppetry and games can be used to teach any subject under the sun!
