The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are very simple but important components of the National Core Art Standards. This is a favorite unit of study in my "brick and mortar" art classes at the school where I teach! Students will analyze one element of art each week, and create a work of art that incorporates or emphasizes that element. The elements, in order of study, will be line, shape, color. form, texture, value and space. Amount and type of homework will be based on individual choices and time needed to complete each work of art prior to the next class. **PLEASE NOTE** This is a SELF-PACED class and is PRE-RECORDED. THIS MEANS STUDENTS WILL WATCH THE PRE-RECORDED VIDEO. There are no live meetings. All interactions between students and the teacher will happen on the class page. This class will be presented via powerpoint and attached handouts. Students will upload images of their assignments for the teacher to see and comment on. This is particularly important if a final grade is required for homeschool or charter school credit. Why Self-Paced? *MY Self-Paced classes ALWAYS cost less than the live versions of the same class! *Self-Paced classes are an excellent choice for families with busy schedules. *Content is exactly the same as live classes, at a lower fee. *Students can work at an independent pace. *Self-Paced classes are fantastic for international students whose time zone doesn't match the teacher's (US Mountain Time), *Self-Paced classes are a great alternative for students who are uncomfortable with live video chat. This class is designed to give students solid knowledge, understanding, and experience working with the seven elements of art: line, shape, color, form, value, texture, and space. By the end of the course, students will have a sketchbook filled with notes, drawings, and ideas. Our self-paced format will be as follows: Content: Weekly videos with a step-by-step breakdown of the art assignments are posted. Videos will vary in length depending on the type of art being presented. Some may be as short as 10 or 15 minutes while others could be ½ hour or more. Student work is expected to take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, depending upon the student’s preferred pace. Weekly Discussions: Students respond to a weekly discussion prompt, quiz, or trivia question posted by the teacher. Drawing Assignments: Students spend time completing their artwork and submit it prior to the next weekly posted assignment. Submit Assignment: Students are required to post photos of their completed artwork in the classroom on the designated post. Keep in mind, uploading artwork for the teacher to see is important for assessment and feedback. Detailed information regarding each class session can be found in the syllabus. Once all assignments have been submitted, parents may request a letter or number grade if needed. Students may also receive a certificate of completion after parent has completed a class evaluation.
Learning Goals
Students will know and understand each of the elements of art and how they can be used in a work of art.
