Class experience

I am a former public and private school teacher, current homeschooling Mom to a child with special needs, and a visual artist. I have a Master of Education and have taught native and non-native English speakers in and outside of the United States.

For mixed classrooms of special needs and typical learners, I developed and delivered instruction in art to support the learning of math concepts, scientific ideas, language arts, and social studies. Lessons were individualized and modified for special needs learners, as needed. Examples of individualized instruction/modifications include pairing verbal instructions with visual supports, providing large print directions, repeated verbal cueing, breaking down projects into smaller chunks, modifying requirements to emphasize quality over quantity, providing additional time to complete work, and delivering instruction in small group settings.

Now, in homeschooling my daughter, art plays a central role in supporting academics, developing fine motor skills and executive functioning, improving hand-eye coordination and bilateral integration, honing observational abilities, encouraging problem solving and decision-making, enhancing communication and self-expression, sharpening visual spatial reasoning, and increasing focus and concentration. All essential life skills.

Bird seeds
10 pine cones (and/or toilet paper or paper towel rolls. If using paper towel rolls, cut them in half.)
1 large container of peanut butter* (or any nut/seed butter or honey)
*See note in Parent Guidance section

String – to hang the feeders
Scissors

1 tray (or plate, baking sheet... anything to contain the seeds)
2 plates – one to place the pine cones on while spreading the peanut butter, the other to place the pine cones when done rolling in seeds
plastic knife – to spread the peanut butter

Newspaper – to keep the mess manageable
Damp towel – to clean hands off, as needed
Gloves – optional, to keep hands clean
ALLERGY ALERT! This project uses peanut butter. If your child is allergic to peanuts, any nut/seed butter or honey can be used instead.

This class is for learners with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It is designed for learner ages 10-15. If your child would like to take this class and is within a couple of years of this age range, he/she is welcome to sign up.

Please be sure to have all materials ready to go for class.

Learners may need assistance in tying the string around the pine cones. (I will show learners where to tie the string but I will not be instructing how to tie. If your child is not able to tie the string around the cones, please assist. Thank you.)

This is a messy project. Your child's hands will be covered with peanut butter and seeds. If your child has an aversion to dirty, sticky hands, but still would like to participate, I recommend appropriately sized gloves.
