Students will be presenting their cases, rebutting their opponents’ cases, asking opponents questions, and persuading the instructor to vote for their cases to win during an in session debate. The topic will be announced after the instructor introduces the students to the format, rules, and the basic “how to” of debate. Previous topics included: convince me to move to a new state or convince me to eat at your favorite restaurant. These fun “convince me” topics allow students to debate and discuss a topic they have previous knowledge and interest in while applying the persuasion and debate skills taught in the class to a fun debate competition. No previous experience is needed. This is for beginning debaters or those who just want a fun introduction to debate.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a private school teacher with 25+ years of teaching experience. My expertise and training are in the fields of Speech and Debate and Philosophy. My students have gone on to compete in Speech and Debate at the college level and had fruitful careers in law, politics, journalism and other professional fields showcasing their communication skills.
I have two Masters degrees from Biola University, a lifetime ACSI credential and I am a Diamond level coach for the National Forensic League. In addition to full time high school teaching, I also coach a collegiate debate team at Providence Christian College in Pasadena, Ca.
I believe that the application of knowledge is critical to education. My passion is about developing critical thinking and public communication skills in my students so they gain confidence in their abilities to accurately articulate what they believe and why they believe it.
I have three young children and my wife and I homeschool them. We love baseball, swimming and backyard BBQ. In college I had the opportunity to pitch on the Biola University baseball team and travel around the world for two summers playing baseball for Athletes In Action. My uncle played 15 years in the Big Leagues so I grew up going to the games and watching him hit home runs. I even caught one from the right field section that he hit while he was playing at Angel stadium. That’s something fun and personal that not everyone can share.
