Students will master the spelling rules behind 4 common spelling mistakes - suffixes, homonyms, and contractions. Class is taught in a multi-sensory format, based on the Orton-Gillingham method, with many opportunities for student engagement. 1 hour per week. Homework is posted each week. Learners are encouraged to complete as many homework activities as needed to fully grasp that week's spelling pattern. One homework assignment will be an audio file with 8 dictated sentences. A Word List will also be provided each week with suggested multi-sensory activities to do to enable the learner to interact with and master the words covered in class. Once the homework is submitted, the teacher is usually able to respond within 24 hours with corrections, detailed feedback, encouragement, and added spelling tips when applicable.Class Experience

Spelling can be frustrating! However, as you slowly learn the spelling rules behind many of our spelling patterns, the frustration decreases and confidence builds. Class is taught in an upbeat, encouraging, and multi-sensory environment where you will learn the spelling generalizations behind 4 common spelling mistakes: • Suffixes such as -ed, -ful, -ness, -ly, -er, -est • Contractions • The Homonyms to/too/two and there/their/they’re Please note there are no live meetings for this class. One instructional video will be posted for each lesson. Each video will be about 25-30 minutes in length. Each instructional video will include: 1. spelling warm-ups to strengthen the skills needed to become a confident speller 2. a short custom-made, engaging video to present each spelling rule 3. practice applying the rule to spelling words, including verbal and written methods to ensure the learners remember the rule itself, and dictation of words, phrases & sentences 4. oral spelling 5. oral decoding Learners are encouraged to pause the video when needed to check their work and review for complete understanding before moving on. Homework is also posted each week. Learners are encouraged to complete as many homework activities as needed to fully grasp that week's spelling pattern. Allison Woolley has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Davis. She has homeschooled her children from kindergarten through high school and has seen the benefit of teaching this explicit manner of spelling to her own children, specifically the help it gives to struggling spellers and readers. Her experience also includes tutoring English Language Arts to 2nd – 6th graders, as well as and teaching other topics & leading various groups for children in pre-K through 9th grade.
