Compass, Ruler & Protractor: All You Need for Geometry Pt.4+ Cohort Alpha

John Jorgensen B.S. Ecology & Evolutionary Biology
Average rating:4.9Number of reviews:(154)
Each section meets for six days over a two-week period and continues with Euclid's geometry while drawing and playing with the tools of a ruler, compass, and protractor. We'll discover math as we create drawings of geometric shapes.

Class experience

Students will continually improve their understanding of the theorems of Euclid and geometry as a basic science within mathematics. The following sections will dive into logic and the use of proofs. They will get practice and gain skills they can use for drawing in art or science and technology as well as applying the theorems to practical proofs in mathematics.
Students will gain the skills they’ll need for more advanced studies in geometry and begin to learn the basics of trigonometry.
Students will also be provided with some tips on how to do a self-assessment so that they can further their math education in confidence.
I have taught math and science from middle school, through high-school college-prep, and tutored at the college level. For the nearly 20 years that I have been teaching, science and mathematics were always my favorite subjects. It was probably because they also related to art and music and the enjoyment of nature, which are pastimes and hobbies of mine!
These are the same materials the students had with them when they started this course in Parts 1 through 3. You will need a notebook with lined or graph paper, a pencil, an eraser, and compass, a ruler, and a protractor. These are available at any office/ school supply store for around $6.00.
Additional supplies will include typical classroom tools such as scissors, tape, glue, and paper.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
I can refer students to video clips (Youtube) that may interest your learners and we can comment upon them in subsequent class meetings. These are purely optional but can aid in extending and reviewing the subject matter.
No accounts are necessary for watching Youtube videos.
An account is necessary to use the Khan Academy but, it is free and remains optional. Parents can go to
khanacademy.org/join and then use the class code I will provide. Students can then test their understanding and themselves, stress-free, and self-paced with my feedback as needed.
These are purely optional but can aid in extending and reviewing the subject matter for your learner's enjoyment:
Video title: “Euclid as the Father of Geometry” by Khan Academy:

For our section on the two-column proof, we will view some video clips from the Khan Academy such as the video titled,
"Two-column proof showing segments are perpendicular | Congruence | Geometry | Khan Academy" on Youtube.
We will view video clips using the shared screen feature of our Zoom class.
Other sources will be PDF files containing helpful worksheets and self-assessment guides that students can use to further their own math education.

I teach STEAM topics. That is Science, Technology, Arts, and Mathematics with a focus on the environment and ecology. I have tutored mathematics to university students in a specialized program for students with learning and attention challenges*....
