Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
O'Canada! This 8 week course will be part 1 of exploring Canadian Social Studies, focusing on People and Environments, the Political and Physical Regions of Canada (based on the Ontario and Alberta Social Studies Curricula, grades 2 and 3). This course does not explore Canadian History, Heritage or Identity.

This course uses a combination of discussion, lecture, activities, short videos and research. Students will be asked to share their thoughts and opinions and will be encouraged to participate as much as they are comfortable. I have a friendly and relaxed teaching style and will work to encourage collaboration and conversation amongst learners.

Schedule:

Week 1: Maps of Canada, exploring maps, cardinal directions and symbols.

Week 2: Mapping skills, how to extract information from maps.

Week 3: Global mapping, understanding that there are a variety of countries, continents, and oceans. Vocabulary related to the globe (sphere, hemisphere, continent, equator, etc) and representing the globe in different ways.

Week 4: Exploring thematic or special purpose maps and grids.

Week 5: Beginning a 4 week study on comparing and contrasting global communities. We will explore how people have adapted to their location and climate, and how that relates to clothing, agriculture, housing and recreation. This week will focus on Canadian communities.

Week 6: Comparing and contrasting global communities - Finland.

Week 7: Comparing and contrasting global communities - Kenya.

Week 8: Comparing and contrasting global communities - Australia.

Our weekly topics are subject to change depending on the needs of the class and the timing of lessons.

Some prior knowledge required. Learners should be comfortable reading simple texts and writing independently.

We will create a supportive and respectful learning environment where learners feel safe and comfortable. Learners are welcome to banter and ask questions to challenge our thinking, but respectfulness and taking turns while speaking is required. Disrespectful language and hateful chats, posts, etc., will not be tolerated and will be grounds for removal from the class. Should disagreements arise, we will practice being respectful even if you disagree.

The minimum number of learners for this course will be upheld. If less than 3 learners are enrolled one week prior to the course starting, the course will be cancelled and families will be refunded.

Parents may email me prior to enrolment with any questions about the course!

Learning Goals

Learners will be able to examine Canadian and global maps, discuss the way our local environment affects our daily life, and use social studies vocabulary to communicate their knowledge.
