This course will explore topics in veterinary science related to the veterinary laboratory and small animal surgery. See the syllabus for the details of what will be taught.

Learners should have taken my Introduction to Veterinary Medicine class or have some basic knowledge of veterinary science. Taking Advanced Vet 1 Self-Paced or live prior to this class is strongly recommended, but not required.

Learners will begin to understand how pets are cared for when they are in a hospital for surgery.
Learners will continue to develop their critical thinking skills while learning how veterinarians approach their surgery cases.

10 Lessons
over 10 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Laboratory- External Parasites
 In this lesson learners will look at photos of external parasites common in dogs/cats, to begin to identify them. These include microscopic and non-microscopic external parasites.

Lesson 2:
Laboratory - Hematology and Ear Cytology
 In lesson 2 students will learn about some diagnostic tests that are done in the veterinary lab. They will also learn how veterinary lab technicians/ veterinarians make blood slides and ear cytology slides and what they look like under the microscope.

Lesson 3:
Surgical Equipment and Instruments
 In this lesson students will become familiar with common equipment, supplies and instruments used in veterinary surgery. Equipment will include the anesthesia machine, surgical monitors, drapes, suture and a variety of surgical instruments.

Lesson 4:
Surgical Prep of the Patient
 Students will learn about the protocols and steps veterinary technicians use in preparing a patient for surgery. The teacher will discuss how a patient is put under anesthesia, surgical site prep, and getting the patient ready on the surgery table.

Supply List
a box of microscope slides (if possible - otherwise cut thin cardboard or card stack into slides), "fake" blood such as gel food coloring/Halloween fake blood/or acrylic paint.

I have been a certified veterinary technician for more than 30 years, have a M.Ed from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.  

I have been teaching  at local colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs for 13+ years, a private university in an Equine Studies program for 4 years and previously taught at a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. 

I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has a mini horse, a Paint horse,  4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 6 chickens and 4 cats!  

I am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with all learners from diverse backgrounds from all around the world! If your learner has a dream to be a veterinary professional, then I am excited to help them on this first step!
