This course will help learners establish a foundation for understanding how the horse's body systems are structured, how they function and how this is important to the care of these amazing animals. During a once-weekly live discussion with PowerPoint slides, we will cover a body system/organs. We will relate that back to practical application in caring for our horses. Week 1Lesson 1Introduction, Terminology and Integumentary SystemThis lesson will begin with the introduction of the definitions of anatomy and physiology. Medical directional terminology will be shared. The Integumentary system will begin the study of equine anatomy. Unit assignments will be given.Week 2Lesson 2Skeletal and Muscular SystemsThis lesson will start with defining conformation and soundness. The skeletal system and bones, ligaments, hooves and types of muscles will be discussed. Unit assignments will be given.Week 3Lesson 3Digestive SystemThe digestive system including the teeth will be discussed and how equine digest food. Unit assignments will be given.Week 4Lesson 4Respiratory SystemThe respiratory system and some common respiratory issues will be shared. Unit assignments will be given.Week 5Lesson 5Cardiovascular and HematologyThe cardiovascular system and hematology will be discussed. Vital signs will also be taught. The course project/presentation will be explained. Unit assignments will be given.Week 6Lesson 6Nervous and Endocrine Project Presentation examples shownNervous and Endocrine Systems will be discussed. Some neurologic issues will be shared. Project presentation examples will be shown. Unit assignments will be given.Week 7Lesson 7Renal- Urinary, Learner Q&AThe renal system and urinary conditions are the focus of this lesson. Time will be left for Q & A on course topics or the final project.Week 8Lesson 8Learner project presentationsLearners will present their horse project story presentations. Learner feedback on course welcome.

- Learners will use the knowledge they now have about the body systems and use their critical thinking skills to relate that back to the practical ways we care for equines to keep them happy and healthy.
I am a certified veterinary technician and have bred, raised, trained and shown horses for many years. I have a M.Ed. from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. I have been teaching at local community colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs and a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. I also teach at a private university in an equine studies program. Along with that, I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 6 chickens and 4 cats! I am absolutely passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and Equine and veterinary sciences with others and look forward to helping your learner explore the possibilities! It is exciting to share my love for horses with the next generation of equestrians!

Some videos may contain ailments of the horse as it relates to the body system being discussed. If a student is sensitive to a horse being sick and does not want to watch the video, they are not required to.
