Assessment
Students will be assessed throughout class and at the end of class through questions and/or sharing of drawings.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 9
Intermediate - Advanced Level
In this one-on-one animal drawing class, students will learn to sketch a realistic orca/killer whale, using pencil. I will demonstrate each step for students and have students complete that step along with me. My classroom is a calm, fun, and creative environment where discussion between teacher and student is encouraged and a great place for students to make lasting friendships. I ask students questions throughout the lesson to check for student understanding and increase engagement. Students may interact with each other if they want to share what they learn during class. Students who enroll in this class should have basic drawing skills, like drawing and manipulating shapes with a pencil.
Learning Goals
1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of an orca, using pencil (full body).
2. Students will learn techniques for smooth blending, pencil application, gradient blending, and adding contrast.
3. Students will learn techniques to create water reflections on the orca's body, using pencil, an eraser, and a white gel pen (gel pen is optional).
4. Students will learn a few facts about orcas.

Bachelor's Degree in Education from Weber State University
Welcome to my teacher page! My name is Torri McCarrey, and I am very passionate about teaching visual arts and core curriculum. My core curriculum courses often use an art integration approach to learning (e.g., drawing your own monster using adjectives). I also teach realistic animal drawing, landscape painting, holiday themed art, and more! I am a certified teacher with two Bachelor of Science Degrees in teaching, Elementary Education (kindergarten through sixth grade) and Early Childhood Education (pre-kindergarten through third grade). I have also drawn realistic and quirky animal portraits for nearly ten years. My values and philosophy of teaching include providing students with a calm and creative learning environment that provides the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences through art integration. I am also an avid animal lover, gardener, and aspiring illustrator and author, (I am currently working towards publishing my first children’s picture book). If you would like to email me, I try to respond within twenty-four hours, Monday through Friday. Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with you!
