Welcome to the ultimate book club and art club for fantasy readers and artists.

Join the author and illustrator of middle grade fantasy novel, Brush of Magic, for a 6 week book discussion and art club. Please see book description below for specific book details.

Every week, students will be provided questions (posted to the classroom) to reference while reading the assigned week's chapters. Chapters WILL NOT be read during class. It is the responsibility of the student to read assigned chapters outside of class. Questions will be discussed in class, which will include topics such as, but not limited to:

*Plot Points
*Character Motivations
*Foreshadowing
*Themes

Discussion questions will strengthen learners comprehension and critical thinking skills.

During class, while discussing questions, students will learn to draw/paint characters and/or scenes from the book. Some weeks, the art will be a specific drawing/painting the instructor will guide students through, step-by-step. Other weeks, students will be provided with prompts to create their own unique art where there are no specific steps for students to follow. Prompts will be given to students the week prior to class so they can think about what they want to draw/paint while reading that week's assigned chapters. If students have difficulty composing their own art, the instructor will have an example shown and is happy to provide support however the learner needs.

For the art created in each class, students are not limited to any specific art supply or medium. Even if it says "colored pencil" for that week, students can use paint instead if that is what they want.

This class is designed to maximize creative freedom, while providing a nurturing environment and guided direction.

Students may ask the instructor and/or other learners about their process of writing and/or creating art throughout class. This is a safe space to encourage and learn from one anotherβ€”and have fun!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Weber State University
After graduating with Bachelor's Degrees in Elementary and Early Childhood Education, I decided to make the leap of starting my author and illustrator career. Since then, I've published my first illustrated middle grade fantasy novel, Brush of Magic.

For several years, I have taught and created a variety of art classes, including realistic drawing, watercolor painting, and illustration. I love the time I get to spend with my students, creating art, and chatting about booksβ€”especially if the books and art are whimsical or magical!

Along with teaching art, writing books, and illustrating, I run my own art shop. All the artwork, books, and stationary designs in my shop are created by me.

I often find inspiration for my art and books through reading, spending time with my cats and dogs, and brainstorming imaginary creatures in my sketchbook.
