In this one time class, we will unpack and explore everything you ever wanted to know about leaves. Our main questions for exploration are: Why are leaves special and what do they do? How do animals use leaves? What are the different types of leaves? and, Why do leaves change and fall in Autumn? We will take out time introducing leaf anatomy and physiology, photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration. Students will also learn about how plants and animals (including us) benefit from leaves. In addition to the in-class lecture, short videos, and study guide, student will engage in a short project to design a small forest plot that could sustain all manner of life. Before closing, we will review a packet of at-home, hands-on, leaf activities that students can complete with their families.
