In this multi day course, core topics in Algebra 1 will be covered. Each week, one to two unique topics will be introduced, and students will be given a chance to apply the knowledge gained by practicing them. This is a lecture style class where I will be lecturing for the first part. Students are encouraged to ask questions at any point in class. This is an interactive class where student input is vital. I will be going over example problems, and then students will be expected to participate by solving similar questions and discussing answers. Lesson 1: Basics of Algebra and Equations Order of operations, PEMDAS, evaluating algebraic expressions, applying distributive property, and combining like terms, One step equation (using all operations), multi-step equations (using all operations), absolute value equations, equations with variables on both sides. Lesson 2: Inequalities and Graph Find the slope, from line, points, and line equation, graphing absolute value equation. One step inequality, Absolute value inequalities, graphing one variable inequality. Lesson 3: Solving systems of equation Solving for two unknowns using two equations using elimination, and substitution method Lesson 4: Exponents Intro to exponents, properties of exponents and operations, multiplication, addition, subtraction and multivariable exponents Lesson 5: Radicals and rational expressions Identifying radicals, simplifying radical expressions, introduction to distance formula and midpoint formula. Multiplying and dividing radicals, multiplying and dividing rational expressions. Lesson 6: Polynomials Identifying polynomials, order of operations on polynomials and factoring polynomials. Lesson 7: Functions Introduction to functions, in and out put. Evaluating functions, domain and range of functions, maximum and minimum of a function. Lesson 8: Quadratics equations and functions Identifying a quadratic equation, solving using factoring, and quadratic formula.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to understand concepts explored in Algebra 1, such as systems of equations, functions, polynomials and exponents.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am Sarah Karimi. I have been teaching science and mathematics to K-12 since 2018. At Outschool I plan to teach Math and Chemistry. I am a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Dallas. I completed my undergraduate studies from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a double major in Chemistry and Environmental Sciences. I graduated magna cum laude and as a senior I was inducted in one of the most prestigious academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa.
I am passionate about the sciences and mathematics. I believe children are born scientists because they are curious about everything around them. They like to touch and feel things that interest them. It is crucial to encourage students from a young age to be curious and stay curious. They should be actively involved in the process of learning and developing scientific skills which will help them conduct a more mindful and purpose driven life.
My teaching style involves by asking the question why? Why should I learn a given topic? I believe it is important to answer why in the first few minutes of teaching a class. A good teacher inspires students by highlighting the importance of learning a skill. For instance, when students learn how to calculate percentages they can find its relevance in their daily lives when calculating discounts or taxes when shopping. I love giving real life examples when teaching math and chemistry. I am passionate about making students aware that things that they use daily, like vinegar and table salt can be explained using chemistry. By giving a face to a chemical compound like acetic acid i.e. vinegar, my students tend to remember the chemical and physical properties easily, and think of its potential uses.
I try to make sure my classes are engaging by asking students their thoughts and opinions about the topic in discussion. Further, as a teacher I teach them techniques which will make problem solving easier and the whole process of learning enjoyable. I try to incorporate real life examples in my classes. This way the students can implement what they have learned in class at home.
My hobbies include but are not limited to; reading, swimming and rowing. I love spending time with family and friends.
I hope to see you in my class :)
