Inventive Writing
In these lessons, learners will write many variations of the basic essay model, including responses to literature, literary analysis, timed essays, a super-research essay (9–13 paragraphs), a contrast essay, narrative essays, personal essays, and persuasive essays. Students will learn MLA format including in-text citations of sources.
As a lifelong learner, I too am always striving for growth. After years of using the IEW curriculum, I decided I wanted to share what I had learned with others and became a registered instructor with IEW. (Link for verification: https://iew.com/events-classes/instructors/find-accredited-instructor/330449) I have also been a tutor (teacher) for a local classical co-op, studied through literature seminars, and attended practicums to enhance my own reading and writing knowledge.

I am also a certified TESOL/TEFL/EYL teacher, professional writer, beta reader, proofreader, editor, and homeschool mom. I have a love for the English language (I have a BA in English to prove it), the smell of new books, and transferring ideas from mind to paper. My goal is to promote a love of learning while offering a safe and fun environment. I truly have a passion for reading and writing and would love to share my knowledge and experience with your children.
Homework Offered
Lessons will be assigned in class each week depending on what we cover in class and what is remaining. There will always be a writing assignment.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learners are assessed each week in class based on their contribution to conversations. They will also be assessed through homework submissions each week. Please note that the IEW workbooks include a rubric (checklist) that is used for grading purposes each week.
Grades Offered
Grades are based on the learner's writing each week using the IEW checklist.
THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER COURSE: It is assumed that learners taking the class are already fairly comfortable with most of the basic elements of IEW style (dress-ups, sentence openers, and decorations) and models of structure.
The IEW workbook is a requirement for this course.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
IEW is a wonderful writing program but, especially in the beginning, is best for those who have writing support at home. While the content is not the most important part of the program, being able to follow the directions and guidance supplied in class and the workbooks is.

Gimkit, Blooket, and Kahoot! will be used for gameplay as an assessment tool in addition to what learners write in class. Please note that an account is not required. The game code will be sent to learners during class.

Google Suites products (Docs, Slides, Forms) will be used to present materials and submit writing assignments. Students are welcome to use the writing tool that best suits their needs and is approved by each family.
