Class Experience

US Grade 4
In this 4th-grade continuous math course, students will focus on building a deep understanding of ONE essential math concept at a time EACH WEEK as indicated by the Common Core State Standards. This class is designed to strengthen skills in these mathematical concepts. This class is structured to provide flexibility as the weekly content focus will be chosen randomly and changed each week.

Throughout the course, we’ll cover a range of essential 4th-grade math topics, including:
- Multiplication and Division (with larger numbers): Students will learn to multiply and divide larger numbers (up to four digits) and practice with multi-digit numbers. They will also solve word problems that involve multiplication and division, reinforcing their understanding.
- Place Value and Number Operations: Students will understand and apply place value up to 1,000,000. They will also be working with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in the context of larger numbers.
- Fractions and Decimals: The course will cover simplifying fractions, comparing and ordering fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, and introducing decimals. Students will also understand the relationship between fractions and decimals.
- Measurement: We will explore units of measurement (both standard and metric), learning how to convert between them and solve real-world problems involving length, weight, and volume.
- Geometry and Shapes: Students will learn about geometric shapes, including quadrilaterals, triangles, and other polygons. They will also explore the concepts of perimeter, area, and symmetry, helping them understand spatial relationships.
- Data and Graphing: Students will interpret and create different types of graphs, such as bar graphs, line plots, and pictographs, to analyze data and solve problems.

This course is for those wanting additional practice with what they already know or need more help understanding. With that being said, students can join at any time as I will be teaching ONE topic/standard/skill each week. For example, one week we may focus on multiplying, the next week will be division and the following week may be learning about shapes. This is to allow the student to gain extra help with their skills.

We will begin each class with a quick review of previous lessons to reinforce understanding. We will then move into a mini-lesson using guided examples, followed by group practice and then independent work.

There will be discussion and games to ensure all students are engaging and interactive. I encourage questions and curiosity.

Learning Goals

Students will master addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of multi-digit numbers, including solving real-world word problems and understanding the relationships between these operations.
Students will gain a solid understanding of fractions, including simplifying, comparing, and performing basic operations with fractions. They will also begin working with decimals and learn how to relate them to fractions.
