Class Experience

US Grade 5
In this 5th-grade continuous math course, students will focus on building a deep understanding of ONE essential math concept at a time EACH WEEK as indicated by the Common Core State Standards. This class is designed to strengthen skills in these mathematical concepts. This class is structured to provide flexibility as the weekly content focus will be chosen randomly and changed each week.

Throughout the course, we’ll cover a range of essential 5th-grade math topics, including:
- Operations with Fractions and Decimals:
1. Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.
2. Multiplying fractions and understanding their real-world applications.
3. Converting between fractions and decimals.
4. Comparing and rounding decimals

- Advanced Multiplication and Division:
1. Multi-digit multiplication and division
2. Word problems with multi-step solutions

-Geometry and Spatial Awareness:
1. Identifying and calculating areas, perimeters, and volumes
2. Working with angles and geometric transformations (rotation, reflection, translation)

-Data Analysis and Probability:
1. Collecting data, creating graphs (bar graphs, line plots)
2. Understanding mean, median, mode, and range
3. Introduction to basic probability concepts

-Problem Solving and Critical Thinking:
1. Multi-step word problems and strategies
2. Understanding and applying mathematical reasoning

This course is for those wanting additional practice with what they already know or need more help understanding. With that being said, students can join at any time as I will be teaching ONE topic/standard/skill each week. For example, one week we may focus on order of operation, the next week will be division and the following week may be learning about geometry. This is to allow the student to gain extra help with their skills.

We will begin each class with a quick review of previous lessons to reinforce understanding. We will then move into a mini-lesson using guided examples, followed by group practice and then independent work.

There will be discussion and games to ensure all students are engaging and interactive. I encourage questions and curiosity.

Learning Goals

Students will develop fluency in operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. By the end of the course, students will be able to solve multi-step problems.
Students will gain a solid understanding of geometry, including the properties of shapes, symmetry, angles, and transformations. They will also be able to solve measurement problems involving length, area, perimeter, and volume.
