This 3D Play Dough Treasure Map Adventure will guide learners in making their very own tropical island treasure map using play dough. They will create a unique story about their treasure quest as they build classic tropical island features like trees, volcanoes and bodies of water. They'll learn about how to create texture with different household tools as they create their map, and then they'll bury the treasure. They'll learn a bit about creating directions for finding the treasure so others (in their household) can interact with the map after class to find the treasure. My teaching style is inclusive and supportive. I want learners to feel inspired. They will get to ask questions, make suggestions, and share what they are working on. I use two screens to facilitate this club so I log in with my computer and with my smart phone. One screen allows the viewer to see me, and one screen is the Art Screen. Learners may PIN the Art Screen which allows them to see my hands and the art-making while I facilitate this club.

Parental guidance is required for the use of scissors.
Many brands of play dough contain gluten. You can find gluten-free dough alternatives for those who are either allergic to gluten or Celiac. Here is an example:

Supply List
6-8 small jars of play dough. Whatever colors you have totally works, but if you’d like it to be color-accurate you could be sure to have at least: red, yellow or orange, blue, green, white, and brown. (Play dough colors might mix during the making of this treasure map.) Play dough rolling pin, play dough cutting tools like a knife or pizza roller. Scissors Pencil or chopstick A fork and a spoon A paintbrush (or if you don't have this, something else that could be used to create texture in the play dough when you press into it like a leaf, a piece of string, a rough stone, etc.) A small amount of pretend jewels, coins, stones or beads to use as treasure. A good surface to build your treasure map on. This could involve a cookie sheet, pizza pan, lunch/school/craft tray or simply a suitable table to work at.

Hello! I run a mobile art lab based in the Seattle area called The Makery. I teach toddler art and sensory play classes, preschool art classes, elementary summer camps, and I facilitate art birthday parties for children. I have a degree in Social Work with an emphasis on working with children. I worked as a Lead Art Teacher at a Montessori Preschool from 2010-2015, and I have been running the mobile art lab since 2015. I create a positive and nurturing learning environment so children feel comfortable expressing themselves creatively. I like that there are no right or wrong ways to make art, and you can use practically anything you have around you to make art like recycled materials, nature and everyday household materials. I have a 7 year old, and we live in Bremerton, WA which is a ferry ride away from Seattle. We live three blocks away from The Puget Sound where we can see Orca whales swimming by!
