Class Experience

This private class is designed to meet the specific math needs of the learner in a one one one learning environment. Prior to setting up a schedule, I will consult with the parent to determine their child’s math strengths and weaknesses. I will create weekly lessons based on second grade mathematics standards. I will use a variety of teaching strategies and tools to keep the learner engaged. Lessons will be creative, fun, and highly interactive with me, all while developing their math skills. I will cover the following scope and sequence unless instructed to do otherwise by the parent. It may look like this.
Week 1 Developing a number sense in counting
Week 2 Addition and subtraction within 20 with and without regrouping
Week 3 Place Value 
Week 4 Analog and Digital Time to the hour and half hour
Week 5 Money
Week 6 Shapes 2D vs 3D with attributes
We can decide together the skills you would like to focus on.

Each lesson will also address math vocabulary. I believe that learning math concepts should extend beyond just working the problem. Developing a deeper understanding of how and why things work like they do requires the teacher and student to dig a little deeper. I promise to do this with your learner! 
After each class, I will send a weekly report to the parent with a brief performance summary. In the performance summary, I will also list any materials that will be needed for the upcoming lesson. I look forward to meeting your child and working with them to develop their math skills and confidence.

Hi Parents! Thank you for your interest in my classes. I offer a wide variety of classes within the life skills, language arts, math, and science content areas. My most popular classes are private math tutoring, shoe tying, introduction to writing and a variety of creative arts classes. These classes are designed for students in elementary through grade 6. I have been a teacher for over thirty years. I have taught students from many cultures and backgrounds. I have taught all content subjects in every elementary grade as well as 6th grade Language Arts. I have taught students on line, in public, parochial, homebound, after school, and in enrichment settings. To date, I have taught over 8,000 virtual on-line classes! I am a licensed teacher, administrator, instructional coach, and also have my academically gifted certification. I earned my masters in school administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a highly-qualified bachelors in K-6 from Elon College/University. In addition, I have an associates degree in Early Childhood Education. How we learn and the stages we move through are always taken into account when creating and delivering instruction. In my classroom, I use a wide variety of instructional strategies and research based methodologies to meet the individual learning styles and interests of my students. I use inquiry based learning and believe students learn best when their learning styles and interests are part of the classroom experience. Relationships are an essential part of a students success both in and out of the classroom. Building strong relationships with my students is at the core of my instructional approach. I am a lifelong learner and want to inspire my love for learning with all of my students, in hopes they will be too. Teaching is my passion but in my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, embroidery, spending time outdoors and being on the water.
