This multi week, private class has been designed with individual student interest in mind! Students will practice reading using a variety of genres, including informational text, biography, historical nonfiction, fables, poetry, folktales, fairytales, and myth/legend. Every week they will choose their passage for the next week. Classes will focus on reading for meaning, vocabulary skills, and reading strategies, reading comprehension. I will teach the tiered vocabulary words for the passages and the skills associated with decoding pronunciation and reading for meaning. Students will learn how to use clues in the passage to help figure out the meaning of the vocabulary words. Too often, students are able to read or sound out unfamiliar words but fail to understand the meaning. When students work to decode unfamiliar words their reading comprehension is often affected. I will teach strategies that can help build their vocabulary as well as their reading comprehension. The two go together! Each reading passage will have comprehension questions. We will read for meaning and learn how to use text evidence to answer the comprehension questions related to the passage. I will work closely with each student to address their reading strengths and weaknesses. I will teach reading strategies to help build fluency. Hi Parents! Thank you for your interest in my classes. I offer a wide variety of classes within the life skills, language arts, math, and science content areas. My most popular classes are private math tutoring, shoe tying, introduction to writing and a variety of creative arts classes. These classes are designed for students in elementary through grade 6. I have been a teacher for over thirty years. I have taught students from many cultures and backgrounds. I have taught all content subjects in every elementary grade as well as 6th grade Language Arts. I have taught students on line, in public, parochial, homebound, after school, and in enrichment settings. To date, I have taught over 8,000 virtual on-line classes! I am a licensed teacher, administrator, instructional coach, and also have my academically gifted certification. I earned my masters in school administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a highly-qualified bachelors in K-6 from Elon College/University. In addition, I have an associates degree in Early Childhood Education. How we learn and the stages we move through are always taken into account when creating and delivering instruction. In my classroom, I use a wide variety of instructional strategies and research based methodologies to meet the individual learning styles and interests of my students. I use inquiry based learning and believe students learn best when their learning styles and interests are part of the classroom experience. Relationships are an essential part of a students success both in and out of the classroom. Building strong relationships with my students is at the core of my instructional approach. I am a lifelong learner and want to inspire my love for learning with all of my students, in hopes they will be too. Teaching is my passion but in my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, embroidery, spending time outdoors and being on the water.
