Beginner Level
In this eight week writing class for beginners, we will meet twice a week to learn how to write the four most popular styles of writing. These are the styles of writing that young children should know by the end of elementary school. We will begin this writing journey with a discussion about writing. We will talk about the many reasons people write. We will share our personal likes and dislikes related to story telling and writing. I will ask them about their wishes, likes, dislikes and use their responses to create relevant and meaningful writing experiences. During our first week, we will practice our skills at oral storytelling through a variety of teacher led activities. They will learn that all writing begins with an idea! Think it, Say it, Write it is my mantra for writing! I will introduce and guide their use of thinking maps and graphic organizers to aid them in organizing their ideas and thoughts. Every week we will learn how to write one of the following pieces. Narratives (stories), descriptive (definitions, directions, instructions, essay, similes, and metaphors. We will progress to expository writing (research, factual reports, magazine articles) and finally persuasive (opinions with facts to support.) This class will be fun and highly engaging! I will use a variety of methods and activities to prompt their thinking. They will work through the writing process, from sloppy copy, to editing and revision, to final publication. I will assist them with spelling, capitalization, and sentence structure in a relaxed and nurturing manner. Hopefully, they will end the course knowing the Fab Four and that writing can be lots of fun! See you soon!
