Students will do the research portion during each class. I will help them incorporate their factual findings into their writing by using graphic organizers to map our thinking. I will also model each step for them. I will provide feedback and ask the students to give comments, suggestions, and praise to each other too. Example: I really like the way you....I think you could include .... I believe we should be good listeners and support each other.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
Prior to class, learners will choose an animal they would like to learn more about. This will be the basis for their research. Learners will send the teacher a message through the classroom informing me of their choice prior to our first class meeting. This way I can do some prep work and research their chosen animal to learn more about their animal choice. Week 1 we will share with each other the animals we have chosen. We will have a group discussion and create a list of questions we would like to know more about. We will learn how to write a topic sentence and introductory paragraph including our hook sentence or attention getter. They will learn how to write a thesis statement too! I will model this and guide each student through the writing. We will share our writing with each other and provide peer feedback. We can and will learn from each other. A second device will be need for research and fact finding. Week 2 paragraph 2 How to use factual information and a graphic organizer to map thinking. We will learn what makes a good paragraph. Hooks, facts, details, personal opinions and reactions, as well as how to transition from one paragraph to another will be taught each week. Week 3 paragraph 3 repeat the process for paragraph 2 main idea #2 with three supporting details. How to transition between paragraphs. Week 4 paragraph 4 repeat the process for paragraph 3 Week 5 how to write a closing statement and conclusion paragraph. How to tie it all together! Private classes are also available! Hi Parents! Thank you for your interest in my classes. I offer a wide variety of classes within the life skills, language arts, math, and science content areas. My most popular classes are private math tutoring, shoe tying, introduction to writing and a variety of creative arts classes. These classes are designed for students in elementary through grade 6. I have been a teacher for over thirty years. I have taught students from many cultures and backgrounds. I have taught all content subjects in every elementary grade as well as 6th grade Language Arts. I have taught students on line, in public, parochial, homebound, after school, and in enrichment settings. To date, I have taught over 8,000 virtual on-line classes! I am a licensed teacher, administrator, instructional coach, and also have my academically gifted certification. I earned my masters in school administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a highly-qualified bachelors in K-6 from Elon College/University. In addition, I have an associates degree in Early Childhood Education. How we learn and the stages we move through are always taken into account when creating and delivering instruction. In my classroom, I use a wide variety of instructional strategies and research based methodologies to meet the individual learning styles and interests of my students. I use inquiry based learning and believe students learn best when their learning styles and interests are part of the classroom experience. Relationships are an essential part of a students success both in and out of the classroom. Building strong relationships with my students is at the core of my instructional approach. I am a lifelong learner and want to inspire my love for learning with all of my students, in hopes they will be too. Teaching is my passion but in my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, embroidery, spending time outdoors and being on the water. I am happiest when playing with my eight year old grandson Alex and our adorable dog Gracie. I hope you will check out my catalog of classes. I would be happy to create a new class for your interests too. I hope to meet your child soon! Educationally Yours, Jamie
