Class Experience

PLEASE NOTE: I do have multiple times and days available for this 1:1:-) Due to the highly individualized nature of this class, and because EXF skill level/necessary support vary widely, it's best for us to touch base prior to scheduling. Together we will come up with a plan and time(s) that work for you and your child.
*******
Structured as a private 1:1 session, I provide targeted support for executive functioning skills - flexibility, task initiation, focus & attention, time management, working memory, perseverance, metacognition, planning, self-control, and organization.

I use an assortment of materials - many "tried, true, and tested" during my years in the classroom and as a private tutor. Such as worksheets, games, puzzles, dynamic lectures, picture cards, study strategies, and graphic organizers, to name a few things.

Before our first session, I ask parents to share the EFX challenges and strengths specific to the individual student. This information helps me to meet the student's area(s) of need. Also, I encourage parents to choose a specific area of focus, such as following one-step and multi-step unrelated directions, showing flexibility in friendship, time management (scheduling, estimating time, elapsed time), overcoming obstacles (writing SMART goals), using subject and assignment based graphic organizers, delaying gratification (waiting, turn taking), improving memory, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Please be advised, this class is not therapeutic in nature. Discussions around emotions are considered through the lens of self-regulation, which impacts EF success overall.

If there is no pre-identified area of need, I will provide an age and level-appropriate lesson based on the individual student and developmental and academic best practice guidelines.

Additionally, parents can share assignments or materials used within their child's academic setting. This session design offers targeted homework and classroom curriculum support in already established areas.

Children learn best when they feel comfortable within an encouraging and supportive environment; thus, I prioritize the teacher/student relationship. Short brain breaks sprinkled throughout our sessions help kids feel at ease. I have personal and professional experience working with students considered below-average learners, average learners, and above-average learners. I have worked with students categorized as gifted, 2E, ADHD type 1 and ADJD type 2, ASD, neurodiverse and neurotypical.

I have worked with students who want a "work buddy" - someone with whom to engage in a task side-by-side. This arrangement boosts social-emotional regulation, discussion skills, and critical thinking.

With all of these options, my top priority is to increase the student's skill base. I hope students feel like they are working with a supportive and enthusiastic EXF coach.

I can accommodate a variety of schedules, and I am happy to assist students interested in lessons multiple times per week.

I look forward to helping your child work smarter, not harder.
Home and "school" communication is the key to helping your student; thus, we'll be in touch regularly:-)

Proudly, I share with you a couple of reviews from real parents of children with whom I worked:
"5-STARS! Jessica is thorough and incredibly thoughtful. We feel like we have a protection in place for our son."
"5-STARS! It was awesome!"
"5-STARS! Thank you. [Your] plan is perfect and we're on board."

Teacher expertise and credentials
**AS OF MAY 1, 2024 I AM TAKING A TEACHING SABBATICAL FOR BOTH GROUP CLASSES AND 1:1**
I am passionate about teaching children to make meaning out of the text by exercising their comprehension and analytical abilities, developing language skills, improving memory, and expanding their understanding of the world when they comprehend the written word. When I get to be a part of the process of children coming to understand the text and its meaning, I feel fulfilled as an educator and know that these are valuable life skills.
I have spent the past 13 years studying executive functioning and organizational abilities in young children, middle schoolers, and high schoolers for professional and for personal reasons. I have been fortunate enough to attend several professional conferences focusing on the connections between neurodevelopment and paying attention, organizing, planning, prioritizing, task initiation, understanding different points of view, regulating emotions, and self-monitoring (keeping track of what you are doing). My knowledge deepened when, in 2020, I began working as a study skills and executive functioning tutor.
My Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Master of Science in Child Development allow me to design developmentally appropriate lessons optimized for student success. Twenty-four years of combined experience teaching in public school, tutoring, and being a licensed Pediatric Developmental Therapist has given me tools to educate ages 3 through 18. Additionally, working as an online ESL teacher has equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to engage students in a virtual classroom, use digital material and master a variety of live online applications.
When not teaching, I'm busy being a mom to my three children. During my free time you'll find me engrossed in one of my favorite hobbies: foster animal care, loom knitting, tap dancing, or planting in my garden. You will always see me with a book:-)
