Mastery Evaluation
1 hour per week. After an initial assessment in our first meeting, I will give feedback on an ongoing basis. I normally communicate feedback to caregivers after class. I do not normally give long homework assignments, but if a caregiver would like to see more of a specific type of practice, I can absolutely make that available. A student may occasionally be asked to wrap up an activity that we began together in class.Assessment
Students will take an assessment during the first meeting so that I can understand how best to support them. If caregivers would like to periodically check student progress, you may request a follow-up assessment. This will look like the pre-assessment, and it can indicate the type and extent of reading growth. I will also be taking notes for each lesson and will communicate these to the caregivers after class. I give frequent checks for understanding during class in the form of higher-order questioning. This is especially important for our reading comprehension.Class Experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 3
We will build our reading skills using an approach based on the Science of Reading. This approach helps students connect letters with their sounds. This differs from teaching methods that involve reading pictures and guessing. Instead of guessing, we work to learn the correct English codes so that we can accurately read the words on the page. How I structure a lesson: 1. Check-in. I always take a minute or two to check in with students. This time is essential for building rapport and helping students settle into their learning. 2. Phonics and high-frequency words. We use flashcards and other learning games to practice these words. This is where we spend time breaking words into sounds. 3. Fluency. This activity looks different depending on a student's reading level. Beginning readers may read a short passage or book with lots of repetition to build up their fluency. After students gain proficiency, we will perform timed fluency checks. There is a direct correlation between fluency and reading comprehension. 4. Reading and reading comprehension. We'll choose a text appropriate to your child's reading level. (We determine this from a brief assessment given in the first tutoring session. Readings come from sources such as Reading A-Z, Epic Reading, and the library. I like to give students options so that they can read something that interests them. When we're reading, we'll go over story words, and I'll ask lots of comprehension questions. When we run across words we don't know, or when we don't understand, we'll work on it together. Caregivers, if you have specific reading skills that you'd like me to focus on during tutoring, I am happy to do that. I understand that during the school year, it may come to your attention that your child needs a specific reading intervention. I ask that if you have an assignment or text that you would like me to go over with your child, please send me that information at least 48 hours before our meeting. This gives me time to prepare so that we can make it the best lesson possible. My teaching philosophy: I specialize in helping reluctant readers feel more confident in their reading skills. When children feel nervous to learn, it shuts down the learning process. I normalize giving it your best shot, and I create an environment in which we strive for great things. One of my class expectations is that we will never give up. When we are learning together, students will be using their brains a lot, but that doesn't mean we can't learn joyfully. I have a variety of props and puppets that I bring out if the occasion calls for it. I try to match the energy level of the students. I also try to figure out what interests the student and fold that into the lesson in some way. Scheduling: My schedule varies depending on the time of the year and my other work responsibilities. I am located in the Eastern Time Zone. I do not tutor on weekends, but I am open to scheduling requests during the day and during some evenings. If you don't see availability on my Outschool calendar that works for you, please don't hesitate to reach out. It's possible that some availability has opened up or will soon open.
Learning Goals
Students will gain confidence in reading.
Students will fill in knowledge gaps related to phonics and English codes so that they can confidently blend words.

The pace of the class will be determined by the needs of the student. I have experience working with students with learning differences including dyslexia.
Parental Guidance
Supply List
Students who learn best by writing notes may wish to have some paper and a pencil, or a whiteboard and marker for practice. Some students do benefit from this extra reinforcement. Generally, I do not require students to have lots of supplies. I take care of screen-sharing the reading materials we'll need in class. The most important thing for students to bring is a mind ready to learn. Note: If caregivers would like me to work from a text that is not available in one of my collections, the caregiver will be responsible for sending these materials to me at least 48 hours before class begins. Also, it's very important that the texts adhere to Outschool's class content policy, which can be viewed here: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/753895-class-content-policy
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I use reading materials from Reading A-Z, Epic Reading, my own library, and the local library for class. These resources enable me to address the needs, interests, and reading levels of all students. In all cases, the student will never link directly to these items. They will see and read the items through screen-sharing.
