Class

New on Outschool
Over five weeks, your child will build phonological awareness. Understanding and manipulating sounds is essential for literacy. We'll blend and segment our way to reading success, and we'll have fun too!

10 lessons//5 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
This is the end(ing)
We'll practice discriminating between final sounds. Students will play a phonics game to help them practice hearing the ends of words. We'll learn how to blend and practice blending the phonemes. Then, we will practice segmenting onset and rime. We'll practice breaking words into their syllables. At the end, students will listen to a read aloud book called 'Toby the Tiger.' They'll practice making predictions and engaging in discussion about the book.
Lesson 2
Bub is a crab
We will work on final sounds. We'll play card flipping game to practice finding the same ending sounds. Then, we'll practice blending words in slow motion. We will practice splitting words into onset and rime. Then, students will work on dividing words by their syllables. Our read aloud book will be 'The Walrus and the Whale.' I'll model fluent reading, and we will have a conversation about what we read.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
The loud bird and the red toad
Students will listen for the /d/ and /f/ sounds at the end of words. Students will play a game called 'Identify the Ending.' We'll blend phonemes by stretching sounds like a rubber band. We will split a series of words into onset and rime. Students will say and count the syllables in various words. At the end, I will read aloud 'Yuri's Yams.' Students will listen for the /y/ sound, and they will practice engaging meaningfully with the text.
Lesson 4
Thumbs up, thumbs down
We will practice hearing and identifying the ending sounds /g/, /j/, /n/, /s/, and /v/. Students will listen and signal (using thumbs up or another accessible means) to indicate when they hear specific sounds. We will play a short game to practice the endings. We will blend phonemes by stretching sounds. We will practice segmenting words into onset and rime, and we'll break words into syllables. I will model fluent reading with the book, 'The Ugly Umbrella.' We will have a discussion about it.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Grasp at wisps of grass
We'll practice hearing, saying, and identifying /sp/, /th/, /ng/, /p/, /st/, and /r/ sounds at the ends of words. Students will play a word ladder game related to ending sounds. We will practice stretching our sounds to blend phonemes. We will practice splitting words into onset and rime. We will clap out syllables to review this skill. At the end, we will read 'Albert the Angry Alligator.' We will focus on the /a/ sound, listening to fluent reading, and we'll have a book discussion.
Lesson 6
Stuck in the middle
Today we transition to studying medial sounds. We'll focus on /i/ and /a/. Students will play a matching game to practice identifying medial sounds. Students will practice stretching sounds to blend phonemes. We'll use a workmat to segment words into their sounds. The student will learn to break each word into their respective English codes. Then, I'll model fluent reading with the book 'Crazy Cat.' Students will engage in a meaningful discussion of the book.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Finding the center
We'll continue our study of medial sounds. Our focus will be short and long /e/ and long /i/ sounds. We will play a game that helps us practice sorting words according to their middle sound. Students will blend the phonemes by stretching out those sounds. We'll use our workmat to practice segmenting the phonemes. For our read aloud, we'll enjoy 'Kate and Kenny's Junk Art'. I'll model fluent reading and ask comprehension questions. Students will make predictions and engage in a book discussion.
Lesson 8
The boy's choice
Our medial sound study begins with /oi/ and /or/. Then we will play a game in which the students will select a picture card and identify the middle sound. We will stretch sounds to continue out phoneme blending work. Students will use workmats to break each word into phonemes. Our read aloud for this lesson is 'Isabel's Invitation. I will model fluent reading. Students will practice relating to the story, making predictions, and having a book discussion.
 Week 5
Lesson 9
Chalk on the Lawn
Medial sound practice will begin with the middle /o/ sound. They'll practice listening for this sound and discriminating between various middle sounds. Students will play a game in which they identify same and different middle sounds. Students will stretch the sounds in words to practice blending the phonemes. We will use our workmats to segment words into their English codes. Students will be able to name and count the sounds. Our read aloud book is 'Cheese Power!'
Lesson 10
Gruff and Tough
For our final exploration of medial sounds, we will work on the /u/ sounds. We will play a game in which students identify the same and different middle sounds. We will stretch the sounds of several words so that we can blend the phonemes. We will use our workmats to segment words. Students will be able to split these words apart, count the sounds, and identify the sounds that make up the words. Our read aloud is 'Sharon's Shoes.' We will practice making predictions and discussing our reading.
  • Students will be able to blend and segment words by building an understanding of the English codes.
  • Students will differentiate between and produce various final sounds.
  • Students will differentiate between and produce various medial sounds.
  • Students will build phonological awareness. They will be able to develop syllable awareness, discriminate between sounds, and they will practice strong listening skills.
  • Students will practice having meaningful discussions about books.
Teacher Expertise: I am a certified K-8 Reading teacher. In addition to teaching upper elementary school in the brick-and-mortar classroom for several years, I have also taught thousands of ESL lessons online for students aged 4-14. I currently offer 1:1 virtual reading intervention (based on the Science of Reading) for students in grades 1-8.

Homework
Frequency: included
Feedback: included
Details: I may ask students to come up with a word for next time that goes along with what we learned in class. (I will give the specific prompt in class if this is the case.) This homework is just one more chance to practice what we've learned and apply it to words that matter to them. In the subsequent lessons, we will add these to a word wall. This will constitute one check for understanding.
Assessment
Frequency: included
Details: There will be frequent checks for understanding throughout class. I will have a daily grade sheet that I will use during class to ensure that all students are participating and responding correctly to various prompts. Caregivers should feel free to request a progress update at any time. In addition, I will be communicating regularly with caregivers about what I observe.
I have experience working with students with many learning differences including dyslexia. I meet students where they are, and I can adapt materials to support students.
Students may wish to have paper and a pencil or a whiteboard and a marker if they enjoy writing what they hear. These are completely optional. I will provide any curriculum materials required for these lessons.

Beginning in lesson 6, students will need to have a workmat and 4 counters. I will provide a PDF of the workmat, but if students don't have a printer, they may also draw one on a regular piece of paper. The counters can be four small items like coins, erasers, or bingo chips that students can slide across the mat. They do not have to be anything fancy. We just want something that your child can move into the boxes on the workmat while we are segmenting words. (I will send a reminder and the PDF prior to Lesson 6.)
I will be using Reading A-Z materials in these lessons. Students will never have to access an outside resource or navigate away from the Outschool classroom during class to participate in these lessons.
