1 hour per week. I may ask students to come up with a word for next time that goes along with what we learned in class. (I will give the specific prompt in class if this is the case.) This homework is just one more chance to practice what we've learned and apply it to words that matter to them. In the subsequent lessons, we will add these to a word wall. This will constitute one check for understanding.Assessment
There will be frequent checks for understanding throughout class. I will have a daily grade sheet that I will use during class to ensure that all students are participating and responding correctly to various prompts. Caregivers should feel free to request a progress update at any time. In addition, I will be communicating regularly with caregivers about what I observe.Class Experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 1
This class will meet two times per week for five weeks. These ten lessons are designed to build your child's phonological awareness. For this class, we focus on medial and final sounds. Students with strong phonological awareness can understand and manipulate the sounds that make up words. Being able to do this is critical for literacy development. These lessons are highly structured, but there are plenty of opportunities to have fun too. Expect your child to engage through lots of verbal responses. This is a great opportunity to build confidence in foundational reading skills. My teaching philosophy: I believe that students learn best when they are not afraid to try. I operate off of and encourage a growth mindset in my lessons. I also provide an encouraging and safe environment for students. My purpose is to empower students to grow their reading skills while also having fun with their learning. Common Core State Standards addressed in these lessons include: For Kindergarteners: Phonological Awareness: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.A Recognize and produce rhyming words. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.B Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.C Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.D Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.1 (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.) For 1st graders: Phonological Awareness: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.A Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.B Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes), including consonant blends. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.C Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.D Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds (phonemes).
Learning Goals
Students will be able to blend and segment words by building an understanding of the English codes.
Students will differentiate between and produce various final sounds.

over 5 WeeksLesson 1:
This is the end(ing)
We'll practice discriminating between final sounds. Students will play a phonics game to help them practice hearing the ends of words. We'll learn how to blend and practice blending the phonemes. Then, we will practice segmenting onset and rime. We'll practice breaking words into their syllables. At the end, students will listen to a read aloud book called 'Toby the Tiger.' They'll practice making predictions and engaging in discussion about the book.

Lesson 2:
Bub is a crab
We will work on final sounds. We'll play card flipping game to practice finding the same ending sounds. Then, we'll practice blending words in slow motion. We will practice splitting words into onset and rime. Then, students will work on dividing words by their syllables. Our read aloud book will be 'The Walrus and the Whale.' I'll model fluent reading, and we will have a conversation about what we read.

Lesson 3:
The loud bird and the red toad
Students will listen for the /d/ and /f/ sounds at the end of words. Students will play a game called 'Identify the Ending.' We'll blend phonemes by stretching sounds like a rubber band. We will split a series of words into onset and rime. Students will say and count the syllables in various words. At the end, I will read aloud 'Yuri's Yams.' Students will listen for the /y/ sound, and they will practice engaging meaningfully with the text.

Lesson 4:
Thumbs up, thumbs down
We will practice hearing and identifying the ending sounds /g/, /j/, /n/, /s/, and /v/. Students will listen and signal (using thumbs up or another accessible means) to indicate when they hear specific sounds. We will play a short game to practice the endings. We will blend phonemes by stretching sounds. We will practice segmenting words into onset and rime, and we'll break words into syllables. I will model fluent reading with the book, 'The Ugly Umbrella.' We will have a discussion about it.

Learning Needs
I have experience working with students with many learning differences including dyslexia. I meet students where they are, and I can adapt materials to support students.
Supply List
Students may wish to have paper and a pencil or a whiteboard and a marker if they enjoy writing what they hear. These are completely optional. I will provide any curriculum materials required for these lessons. Beginning in lesson 6, students will need to have a workmat and 4 counters. I will provide a PDF of the workmat, but if students don't have a printer, they may also draw one on a regular piece of paper. The counters can be four small items like coins, erasers, or bingo chips that students can slide across the mat. They do not have to be anything fancy. We just want something that your child can move into the boxes on the workmat while we are segmenting words. (I will send a reminder and the PDF prior to Lesson 6.)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
