每週 2-4 小時. Each week learners will have readings, discussion questions, and assessments aligned to the lessons of the week. Learners will complete assessments using Google Docs and share them with the teacher. The teacher will score the assessments and provide feedback right onto the Google Docs.

Course Description:
This independent/flexible Language Arts course does not have any live meetings. The course is aligned to the national standards of citing text evidence, main idea, summarizing, narrative writing, and collaboration and discussion. 

This course goes more in depth to the one time course “Dogs: History and Heroes.”  During this course learners will read articles over dogs. These articles will be used to practice the standards/skills of citing text evidence, main idea, summarizing, and collaboration and discussion. The articles will also foster discussion questions which will be posted on the Outschool classroom page. The last week of the course, learners will create a narrative writing piece. All assessments will be turned in privately to the teacher. Grades/scores will be given on each assessment.

Course Format:
At the beginning of the week, a “List of Learning” Google Document will be posted on the Outschool classroom page. Each “List of Learning” will have steps learners need to complete for the week. These steps will include a lesson video to watch that relates to the standard for the week, the reading assignments for the week, discussion questions to respond to and give feedback to other classmates, assessments to complete, a writing assignment, and possible other assignments or extension opportunities. Any work that will be turned in will be in the form of a Google Document. Learners will need to share the document with the teacher and other students will not have access to the document. 

It is encouraged to have the readings and assignments done by each due date so learners can participate in discussions together. To give each learner a more meaningful learning experience, all learners need to participate in the discussion questions by responding to the questions and giving feedback to other students.

The teacher will be available throughout the week via Outschool to answer any questions and give feedback. 

Course Schedule (Subject to Change):
Week 1
-Lesson: Dog Anatomy
-Lesson: Summarizing
-Reading: “Which animals are smartest: Dogs, cats or raccoons?”
-Reading: “Meet the puppy training to sniff out bugs in Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts”
-Reading: “Australian dogs trained to sniff out endangered species”
-Reading: “Yawns are contagious among wolves just like humans and dogs”
-Reading: “Meet the "unicorn puppy" with an extra tail on his head”

Week 2
-Lesson: Wild to Domesticated
-Lesson: Citing Text Evidence
-Reading: “This rock art may be the earliest depiction of dogs”
-Reading: “Was this 18,000-year-old frozen puppy the ancestor of wolves, dogs or both?”
-Reading: “Accurately counting U.S. pets poses unique challenges for researchers”
-Reading: “Canine empathy is strong when humans are hurt, study says”

Week 3
-Lesson: Heroic Dogs
-Lesson: Main Idea
-Reading: “Katz is a rare breed: she's one of only about 10 pet detectives in the U.S.”
-Reading: “Real, furry superheroes get their own movie”
-Reading: “Recognizing the dogs of war”
-Reading: “Shelter dog Toby learned an amazing trick for owner with epilepsy”
-Reading: “Health Chocolate Lab's nose knows when a diabetic emergency could be lurking”
-Reading: “Psychiatric service dogs trained by inmates help veterans with PTSD”

Week 4
-Lesson: Narrative Writing
-Create a narrative writing piece
