Students who have a strong modeling background can request to bypass the intro course by sending 3 screenshots of their BLENDER modeling work BEFORE signing up for this class. After submitting your 3 screenshots please wait for their approval before signing up. SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS Blender must be installed and fully working on your computer BEFORE you enter your first day of class. After signing up you will receive instructions on how to download and test blender. If Blender does not work on your computer you will get a full refund for your first day of class. CLASS DESCRIPTION This is an INTERMEDIATE level class, please see the PREQUISITE above. Students will model a new project each week. We will cover a wide variety of themes focusing on props, machines, vehicles, and architecture. Modeling approaches such as smooth shading, subdivision surface modeling, and boolean modeling will be approached. More complex materials including procedural and PBR materials will be applied to models. Starting 4/15/24 additional tutorials for materials, lighting, and rendering will be added. PUNCTUALITY POLICY: This is class is very process dependent, and students progress as a team through lessons. Students are required to show up on time or early to class. CLASS ROTATIONS There are 28 projects below in the weekly curriculum rotation. Students don't have to start at the beginning of the rotation. Each week is a stand alone project, they do not build on one another. The rotation repeats every 28 weeks. STUDENTS CAN START ANY TIME IF THEY MEET THE PREREQUISITE, CLASSES BELOW ARE NOT CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER. CURRICULUM SCHEDULE (Watch the class video in the class thumbnail at time code 00:39 to see examples of the items listed below - some examples are still in progress). ROTATION DATES (classes are stand alone lessons, start any time if prerequisite is met): 9/9/24 - 3/23/25 3/24/25 - 10/19/25 (NO CLASS 4/5/25 - 4/13/25 AND 8/30/25 - 9/7/25) 1 sci-fi ray gun 2 sci-fi building 3 medieval sword 4 sci-fi vehicle 5 sci-fi robot 1 6 archways 7 sci-fi spaceship 8 webcam 9 sci fi robot 2 10 game controller 11 sci fi corridor 12 sci-fi robot 3 13 telescope 14 temple 15 drone 16 sci-fi robot 4 17 sci fi crate 18 cell phone 19 3d printer 20 sci-fi robot 5 21 laptop 22 spiral staircase 23 hamburger 24 sci-fi robot 6 25 pizza 26 car - VW bug 27 jeep 28 sportscar HOW THIS LIVE CLASS IS RUN In this class students will follow along with the live demonstrations for each lesson, so they can get any assistance they need during class. Students are encouraged to ask questions when they don't understand what is happening in the lesson. A new assignment is offered each week. When a project is not finished during class, students have the option of using a homework video to complete their work for extra practice. They will be required to follow and complete their assignment with accuracy first, then to use that knowledge to be creative afterwards. ABOUT 3D MODELING 3D models are used by a variety of industries including video games, product development, and engineering. The act of 3D modeling incorporates math and design skills through understanding the basic vocabulary of 3D objects (vertex, edge, face), learning to manipulate objects with a variety of tools, and using scale, measurement, and rotation to position those objects in the x, y, and z coordinates of the 3D scene. NOTE: After signup, please go to the Outschool Classroom "WELCOME POST" to prepare for class.
Learning Goals
The main goal is to make sure students can understand and use 3D animation techniques successfully. The focus is on progress, not perfection.
