What's included

60 live meetings
50 in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. Learners will be assigned homework each week based off our lessons in class. Learners will be required to "hire and editor" for their writing. Their editor will need to correct grammar and spelling mistakes on the rough draft to make it "legal" before a student rewrites their final draft for submission.
Grading
Learner's assignments will be graded according to IEW's checklist for structure and style components. Each learner will be assigned their own personalized checklist based off of their specific needs and ability level. An assignment will either be complete or incomplete. If all items on the checklist are completed, the writing is complete. If there are still outstanding items on the checklist, the paper is incomplete.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
✍️ This course covers the Adventures in Writing program by the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). 🌟 It’s tailored for learners 📚 who face challenges with reading and writing due to dyslexia or other difficulties, but who now read at or above a grade 3 level (USA). It’s perfect for those looking for a structured, explicit writing program led by a certified teacher skilled in supporting literacy challenges. 🧑‍🏫✨

🙌 Learners with prior IEW experience are welcome, but no prior experience is required! 🚪🌟

📖 In this section, we’ll dive into IEW’s rigorous writing program. We’ll meet 2 times per week to provide plenty of time and repetition, helping learners build confidence and competence. 💪✨

✅ Although the class is designed for learners with specific challenges, anyone interested in meeting twice weekly to follow the Adventures in Writing program can join! 📝

Course Details:
📅 Live group video sessions:

2 times per week
30 weeks (60 sessions)
📤 Learners will submit assignments through the Outschool platform and receive personalized feedback via Loom videos for each paper they hand in. ✨

Will there be homework?
✅ Yes! Writing is a skill you improve by doing! 💻✏️ Just like reading, swimming, or dancing, you need practice to get better. 🏊‍♀️💃

During our class:
I’ll teach new techniques 🎯
We’ll practice together 🤝
I’ll gradually encourage learners to work independently as they grow confident and competent 💡✨

Philosophy:
🎓 We’ll follow IEW’s EZ+1 approach (Easy + 1):
🌟 "Easy" means something learners can do with little help and that feels natural to them.

Before introducing a new technique, we’ll ensure that current ones are easy and comfortable! ✅

Flexibility & Individual Support:
📋 The syllabus is flexible to adapt to learner needs:

Need more time on a story or concept? No problem! ⏳
Ready to move ahead? Let’s do it! 🚀
Need a more individualized checklist? I’ve got you covered! 🌟
Individualized guidance will be shared privately through Loom video responses for each assignment learners who need them. 🖥️

🎯 Our Goal:
Each learner will complete 2-5 written pieces from Units 2-7. (Unit 1 focuses on oral responses only.)

⏳ We’ll spend a few weeks on each unit but won’t get stuck too long! Mastery isn’t required the first time around—repetition and progress are key. 🔄✨

Let’s grow your writing skills with fun, focus, and support! 🖊️🎉

Learning Goals

Learn some of the stylistic techniques including but not limited to: -ly adverb, who/which clause, strong verb, because clause, and quality adjective.
Learn the topic-clincher structural pattern: the clincher repeats or reflects 2-3 key words.

I recommend also purchasing the portable walls and/or grammar writing cards. If it is your first time using IEW, the Teacher Manual may be handy if you would like to further support your child at home but this is optional.
