Throughout this flex course, learners will be guided to read one chapter of 'Henry and Beezus' over two weeks. Chapters vary in length and while you are invited to pace your reading over the two weeks, each week will have a specific focus (as seen in the Reading Schedule below). During the course of each week, a consistent schedule will be in place to nurture a steady, anticipated course pace full of comprehension pieces and text-to-self connections, by way of creative and directed writing. READING SCHEDULE: (This reading title is widely accessible; you are free in choosing to lend weekly or purchase these books for the course.) Week 1: Ribsy and the Roast (focus on pages 1-22) Week 2: Ribsy and the Roast (focus on pages 23-33) Week 3: Henry Gets Rich (focus on pages 34-54) Week 4: Henry Gets Rich (focus on pages 55-73) Week 5: The Untraining of Ribsy (focus on pages 74-88) Week 6: The Untraining of Ribsy (focus on pages 89-105) Week 7: Henry Parks His Dog (focus on pages 106-118) Week 8: Henry Parks His Dog (focus on pages 119-129) Week 9: Beezus Makes a Bid (focus on pages 130-139) Week 10: Beezus Makes a Bid (focus on pages 140-150) Week 11: Henry's Bargain Bike (focus on pages 151-164) Week 12: Henry's Bargain Bike (focus on pages 165-173) Week 13: The Boy Who Ate Dog Food (focus on pages 174-189) Week 14: The Boy Who Ate Dog Food (focus on pages 190-201) CLASS STRUCTURE: -- SUNDAY: (1) A video introduction and lesson on the week's text (see focus pages from the reading schedule), themed points in our readings, as well as a model of the specific week's writing prompt. (2) 'Read Aloud Video' task posted. -- WEDNESDAY: Learner completed 'Read Aloud Video' posted. -- SATURDAY: Writing pieces due, in the form of an uploaded image. * * * Any teacher-made printable work in relation to a writing/ artistic piece will be accessible at the beginning of that given week * * * WRITING PROMPTS: Each week will have a set writing prompt, with special focus on the assigned section of each chapter. Writing prompts may be opinion-based, rooted in text vocabulary, tasking work with inferences, predictions, text-to-self connections and more. 'READ ALOUD VIDEO': This portion of each week has the intention of showcasing learner independent reading and connections. It will consist of a specific task by the teacher to choose/ find/ discover reading excerpts that highlight a theme to verbally share via video. For example, a posted 'Read Aloud Video' task during Week 1: Ribsy and the Roast (focus on pages 1-22) can be: 'Find and read aloud a part of the chapter where you disagreed with a character. Then, explain why.' ASSESSMENT: I will provide detailed, encouraging and thought supporting feedback to all weekly pieces, as well as a thoughtful response to each 'Read Aloud Video'. All feedback to writing prompts will be given by Tuesday of the following week. This course is centered around reading with purpose, for enjoyment, identifying text-to-self connections, learning new vocabulary and social situations, as well as strengthening our opinion and text-based writing -- all feedback will be centered in such.

I may be grown up, but my favorite stories are still found in the land of youth literature!
My natural inclination to read anywhere (including upside down in that childhood recliner I mention in my video!) grew to daydreaming about being the characters I so loved reading about and even wondering what they may be like in the real world. Stories and their inhabitants were never flat to me, but rather full of life and complex – just like us, as it turns out!
After receiving my B.A. in English and Psychology, I taught for over a decade, cultivating my joy in literature and writing through teaching the bright, open minds of Pre K – 1st grade students. I became an educator that sought out books to develop rich, cross-curricular lessons and to build oral language and phonics skills. The world of literacy was (and still is!) accessible to all learners: those at grade level, those clamoring for reading challenges and those who built success with the consistency of a one-on-one/ small group learning environment. Each was meaningful, targeted instruction to best suit elementary reading muscles.
Through my literacy-rooted courses, you will find explorations of character development, personal connections, story elements and cause and effect often intertwined with the ‘science’ of writing: parts of speech, grammar, written fluency/ sequencing, oral communication and weaving words into stories that showcase our imaginations and opinions. Our minds and voices are powerful!
