----- I ask that all students follow the classroom rules and policies, students should be respectful and patient during the lesson, dressed appropriately for class and come prepared to read. I also ask that students keep their cameras on for the entire class time, (not required but recommended) this is to help me better assess and help each student, as I can better determine who is struggling with a question when I can see them. This allows me to help the students get the most out of the lesson. -----

In this Ongoing class, students will have the opportunity to read through a diverse selection of reading materials 📖 such as Fiction, Non-ficiton, Informational text and more while also learning and implementing different strategies to help improve their overall reading comprehension/fluency. The strategies and stories are rather diverse and were designed and chosen specifically to help students from the 7th and 8th grades. (But advanced 6th graders and struggling 9th graders may do well in this class too). We will be implementing a mixture of the different reading materials while also incorporating the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
 
Some of the main concepts we will learn about in class include:
Main ideas, summarizing, inferences, figurative language, character analysis, context clues, supporting details, point of view, themes and more.
 
During each of the lessons, students will be encouraged to read out loud, ask questions, share their ideas and engage in thought-provoking discussions. They may also be asked targeted retention and discussion-based questions throughout the lesson to help guide the students to a better and more in-depth understanding of what is being read.
While students are reading the passages they will also be able to work on their overall reading fluency. During each of the lessons, I am planning to guide and assist the students to help them improve their pronunciation, speed and expression. I also desire to utilize those situations as instructional opportunities to help the students work together to identify the meaning of an unknown word, consider the intentions of the author or see if there are any parts of the story that some of the students may not understand.

CLASS STRUCTURE:

1. We will review the class rules

2. Students will collaborate on picking from a selection of stories

3. Depending on the story they choose, I will either screen share the story or send them a custom Genially link (for a more interactive lesson).

4. The students will begin reading the story together. Most reading will be done silently but sometimes we may incorporate reading out-loud.

5. We will then pause between certain passages and answer different comprehensive and discussion-based questions.

6. The lesson may end with some discussion and group-led conversation about what was read.

(Topics and themes will be student led as they will be allowed to browse the reading material and choose a story they would like to read as a group).
