The War of 1812, fought on North American soil, is regarded as a major historical event that shaped the continent as we know it today. Why did the war start? Who fought against each other? Did the White House really burn to the ground? What incredibly famous song was written during one of the war's intense battles? Who won the War of 1812? The answers might surprise you! All of these questions will be answered plus much more as we dive into learning about the War of 1812! The following topics will be covered: -Reasons for the War of 1812 and Countries Involved -Major People Involved -Major Battles -Long Term Effects in North America Because of the War of 1812 But wait, there’s more!! A MYSTERY CHALLENGE.... Not only will learners gain knowledge about the War of 1812 and its lasting effects today, but a mystery challenge related to one of the events will be presented at the beginning of class. Using slides, music, and drama throughout this fun and interactive lesson, I will give various clues for our young sleuths to try their hands at solving the mystery. Learners will each be given the opportunity to discuss their theories with others in the class and will also be encouraged to ask me questions during the lesson to “follow their hunches”. All will be revealed at the end of the class, plus students will have learned a great deal about this important time of history. Let’s put a little mystery in your history!

It has been my pleasure to teach Middle School students the history of North America in Canadian classrooms for over 20 years. The history of Canada and the history of the United States will always be intertwined and it’s awesome to see the lightbulb go off in our kids’ brains when they first realize this!
