This is a course exploring topics in United States History. For this course, we will follow the chronological development of the American people and government by examining the political, economic, social, religious, military, scientific, and cultural events that affected the rise and growth of the nation. Teacher will guide studies through this primarily using the Houghton Mifflin and Harcourt, American History: Reconstruction to Present textbook, but course can be adapted to any student textbook. Teacher will use various formats to make this course fun and interactive including the use of online quizzes with multiple choice format. We will also have Socratic discussion on various topics as we delve deeply into early American history. The course format will closely follow the Unit guidelines as established by the College Board and may utilize the following additional resources: AMSCO, Advanced Placement United States History Barrons, AP US History Princeton Review AP US History GilderLehrman.org National Archive: Eyewitness Accounts Ken Burns Civil War Native Americans in the West Film GPB Martin Luther King, Letter from a Birmingham Jail Indian Removal Act Slave Memoirs and Oral Histories Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass Farewell to Manzanar A Cherokee Woman's America: Memoirs of Narcissa The goal of this course to to prepare students to think critically so they are prepared for the multiple choice and essay questions. Topics will include the following: American Beginnings (1439‐1878) Week of October 18: The Colonial Era Week of October 25: The American Revolution Week of November 2: The New Nation Week of November 9 : Economic and Social Changes Week of November 16: Westward Expansion Week of November 30. The Civil War Week of December 7: . Reconstruction Week of December 14: Mining and Ranching Week of January 11: Industrial Revolution Week of January 18: Roaring 20s Week of January 25: The Great Depression Week of February 2: World War I Week of February 9: World War II Week of February 16: Post War and Communism Week of February 22: Late 20th Century
