Creating Characters and Writing Role Play

Group experience
US Grade 5 - 8
I've been teaching theatre for 25 years and I was also a children's performer for ten of those years. I own a theatre program, and, before the pandemic, I put on a show after every 20 hours of instruction (almost 60 shows in six years!). I've been teaching in some capacity since 1996: public, private, homeschool. I'm also a published writer and love to facilitate as students write their creative ideas. I got the idea for this group from a class I've taught called "Quirky Characters" where teacher and students create characters, write descriptions and then we develop stories around those characters. This group will focus on creating original characters and sharing them with the group. Students can share their characters in a variety of ways: write about them, draw them, create costumes for them, make props for them, etc. Students will then have the opportunity to role play their characters in fantasy fiction with the other members of the group. Every Monday I will post a new prompt to encourage learners to share. I will moderate and join in on the discussions throughout the week. Examples: Please share a drawing or description of an original character you have created. Please write a summary of a story plot with your character. Extra kudos to you if you can add in one of your classmate's characters. Please upload a video of yourself talking and walking like your character. In this group students will have a chance to interact with one another in creative and kind ways. We will have discussion board questions and lots of opportunities to share the creative things they've been working on. Some of my students are writers, some are artists, some are performers and some are all three! I want them to have a safe and encouraging place where they can share whatever interests them and ignites their imaginations.
Learning Goals
This group is a forum that allows for CREATIVITY, CONNECTION and COURAGE....three of the biggest learning goals for a lifetime! My hope is that students will feel safe enough that they can courageously share their creative endeavors, and, in this sharing, connect with classmates. In my theatre, improv and writing classes students are always wanting to share their illustrations, their self made videos and their stories. My hope is this group will be a place where they can do just that. I will use my expertise as a theatre teacher and writer to inspire and facilitate through the process.
