Grado de EE. UU. 3 - 6
In this class we'll be doing a more in-depth study of the first book in the Warrior Cat series by Erin Hunter, "Into The Wild". The series is incredibly popular and entertaining. We'll be going deeper than simply the entertainment of the story. Through this book we'll be learning how to read a novel, how to pull principles and meaning from the book and how we can apply that to our lives. ~Each week we'll start with discussing the plot of the reading for the week. ~We'll look at some of the meaning behind it. Ex: Why do you think the character did this or said this? Why is this important? What is the meaning behind it? ~We'll look for principles we can pull out of the book. Ex: What's true here that applies to people everywhere. (being faithful, telling the truth, etc). ~We'll look for connections. What can we make connections to, in our own lives, in popular culture, in history, etc. During the reading I'd like students to find a quote, question, idea or topic that was meaningful to them. This will help them to look for ideas and themes in the book. They will learn to ask better questions. This can be a quote that they particularly enjoyed directly from the book. This can be a question that we can discuss in the class. This can be something that sparked a memory for them. This can be a connection that they have made to something else. In each class everyone will have the opportunity to speak. I will be facilitating the discussion between the students, but it is very much a discussion oriented class. Discussion questions are primarily open-ended. There are no right or wrong answers. The questions are meant to help us think. Here is the reading schedule for each week: Week 1: Prologue and Chapters 1-3 Week 2: Chapters 4-6 Week 3: Chapters 7-9 Week 4: Chapters 10-12 Week 5: Chapters 13-15 Week 6: Chapters 16-18 Week 7: Chapters 19-21 Week 8: Chapters 22-25
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn about the basics of the book, plot, characters, etc.
They will learn how to read on a deeper level, by looking for meaning and making connections between the book and things they see in life.
They will learn about the art of discussion, taking turns talking and presenting their ideas to the group.
They will be asked each week to come to class with something to share from that weeks reading, a quote that was meaningful to them, a discussion question, or a connection they've made to something else. This will allow for a deeper level of reading, retention and understanding. This will also help them learn how to ask questions.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I love books and have always been a big reader. In fact, I sometimes joke that I should have been a librarian. I did work in a book store during college and assisted in the story time activities for kids. When my own daughter was learning to read, it was the Warrior Cats books that brought out her love of reading. She went from a reluctant reader to a voracious reader. I want to foster this love of reading in others and allow their creativity to take them beyond the books.
