During this lesson, students will use at least 5 multi-sensory techniques to help them memorize the spelling of sight words. Sight words are also known as high frequency words, trick words, popcorn words, and red words. These words do not follow the common spelling patterns of the english language, and students often benefit from memorizing these words. Students will be engaged with one another and be able to share their work as they learn to read, write, and spell the words of the day. Students will be introduced to approximately five words per day. Activities will include dice games, play-doh, painting, writing, and hand motions. This class is designed for 2nd grade students, but there is some flexibility. These audio, visual, and kinesthetic methods for teaching sight words have proven to be effective with struggling readers and students with learning differences (dyslexia & ADHD).
