During this lesson, students will use at least 5 multi-sensory techniques to help them memorize the spelling of sight words. Sight words are also known as high frequency words, trick words, popcorn words, and red words. These words do not follow the common spelling patterns of the english language, and students often benefit from memorizing these words. Students will be engaged with one another and be able to share their work as they learn to read, write, and spell the words of the day. Students will be introduced to approximately five words per day. Activities will include dice games, play-doh, painting, writing, and hand motions. This class is designed for 2nd grade students, but there is some flexibility. These audio, visual, and kinesthetic methods for teaching sight words have proven to be effective with struggling readers and students with learning differences (dyslexia & ADHD). Hi, I specialize in teaching reading. It is my passion to introduce students to books and develop a love for reading in kids of all ages. I have a masters degree in education from Columbia University's Teachers College and a special education certificate in special education from Brooklyn College in New York City. I have worked as a peer tutor, as a test prep tutor, and as an Orton-Gillingham tutor, helping students overcome various reading difficulties to achieve their goals. I also worked as a reading teacher and a special education teacher at a title 1 charter school in NYC. I believe that every child has the potential to become an avid reader, we just have to ignite their passion and build their skills in an individualized way. I recently moved from NYC to live near the ocean. My hobbies include going to the beach, traveling, playing tennis, and or course READING!
