If you teach a child one vocabulary word, he/she might remember that one word. If you teach a child a root word, the learner might be able to decipher the meanings of many more words. For example, if your student knows spec = to look, they might be able to determine the meanings of words like spectacles, spectacular, spectator, speculate, spectrum, and so on. Each week in this class, we will study 1 - 2 Greek and/or Latin roots in depth. Learners will learn how to pronounce the word, spell the word, define the words, identify parts of speech, use the word in a sentence, answer questions about the word, identify synonyms and antonyms, illustrate the word, and more!

The class begins with a Kahoot! warm up to introduce the words. A word web is provided in the welcome message for learners who like to take notes and save their work. After the warm up, learners identify a focus word. Learners are encouraged to choose a word they do not know. Learners will identify the root, origin, definition, synonyms, antonyms, use it in a sentence, and create a visual. Learners are encouraged, but not required, to share their work.

This process repeats for a second set of roots. If time allows, we finish class with a GimKit activity to reinforce our learning.

An optional homework assignment is posted each week for learners looking for extra practice. The Kahoots are also available for review, or for learners who miss class.

Hi, I specialize in teaching reading. It is my passion to introduce students to books and develop a love for reading in kids of all ages. I have a masters degree in education from Columbia University's Teachers College and a special education certificate in special education from Brooklyn College in New York City. I have worked as a peer tutor, as a test prep tutor, and as an Orton-Gillingham tutor, helping students overcome various reading difficulties to achieve their goals. I also worked as a reading teacher and a special education teacher at a title 1 charter school in NYC. I believe that every child has the potential to become an avid reader, we just have to ignite their passion and build their skills in an individualized way. I recently moved from NYC to live near the ocean. My hobbies include going to the beach, traveling, playing tennis, and or course READING!
