What are some of the unique behaviors of shrimp? What is an exoskeleton and how is it unique in the animal kingdom? How do shrimp relate to other arthropods in the ocean? What are the mechanisms of the Mantis Shrimp's epic punch? These questions will guide our exploration of these amazing creatures. This lesson will begin with an anticipatory set or "share session" to identify student's prior knowledge on these topics. New material is presented in a multi-media format. Learners create their own diagrams of marine arthropod structures from teacher modeling and dissection. Our anatomy discussion will focus on the external structure and function of shrimp. Together we will explore other marine arthropods and them based on their characteristics. Learners explore some of the unique niches arthropods occupy in the marine environment.
Metas de aprendizaje
Upon completion of this lesson students will be able to:
-identify the common structures and their function of marine arthropods.
-explain unique niche behaviors of shrimp species such as the cleaner and mantis shrimp.
-identify different species of marine arthropods and where they can be found in the natural world.

Orientación para padres
Please be advised, I will conduct a dissection of a shrimp during class time to explore it's structures focusing on external anatomy. Students are welcome to dissect their own specimen with me during class. It is NOT required. Students should feel free to leave class if they choose, at any time during this activity.
If students are dissecting, it is at the parent's discretion and families assume all risks. Please note- safe food handling procedures are required during dissection.
