Fins, echolocation, blubber and baleen are just a few of the adaptions that marine mammals have that allow them to survive in their ocean habitat. Through an interactive presentation, class discussion and teacher demonstration, we will explore the adaptations marine mammals have evolved to allow them to communicate, eat, sleep and move in the ocean. Our discussion will center around the following species: Narwhal, Manatee, Sea Otter, Humpback Whale and Hawaiian Monk Seal. Class begins with short introductions and a knowledge check. Students are introduced to the characteristics of mammals and brainstorm ways marine mammals adapt to their environment. As a class, students classify these characteristics into behavioral, structural or physiological adaptation. Learners will construct an organizational chart and test their knowledge.
