In this course we will examine the events of the Hundred Years War between France and England, and the way this conflict came to define both nations and the history of Europe. Through our study of this conflict we will learn about the culture of medieval society including the grand medieval tournaments, the code of chivalry, and the high cost of medieval warfare. We will take a close look at the lives of historical figures like the Black Prince, Charles VI "the Mad" King of France, and Joan of Arc. As our course together comes to a close we will examine the affects of the Hundred Years War including the way it defined the Kingdoms of France and England, changed the culture of Western Europe, and led to the European Colonial Period. Class 1: The Shared History of England and France • Relations between England and France before the war. • Kings, knights, and tournaments - culture of medieval Europe. • Medieval armies and their equipment. Class 2: Start of the Hundred Years War • The King of England claims the French throne. • Campaigns of Edward III and the Black Prince. • The spread of the Black Death. Class 3: Retaking France • Decline of the Black Prince. • The campaign to retake France. • Charles the Mad - The "Glass" King of France Class 4: The Last Hope of the French King • The nearly defeated France. • The rise of Joan of Arc. • The legacy of the Hundred Years War. Classes will be taught with a mix of learning strategies including; instructor presentation, maps, videos, activities, and student discussion. All classes will include informal assessments to check for student understanding such as review questions, discussion questions, and trivia games. These assessments are given to check for student understanding, and give students the opportunity to apply what they have learned. **Students do not need prior knowledge of world history to take this class.**

Parents and students should be aware that due to the subject matter of this class we will be discussing the tragic results of warfare. There will NOT; however, be any graphic depictions or descriptions of violence in the class.

The curriculum for this course is based on the books "The Hundred Years War: A People's History" by David Green and "The Hundred Years War: The English in France 1337–1453" by Desmond Seward. These books are not required nor recommended for students.
