Throughout this class students will examine how we define civilization, the conditions needed to start one, and the reasons hunter-gatherer societies created permanent settlements. By studying ancient civilizations we will learn the purpose and systems that form all societies, including our modern day nations. Week 1Lesson 1Prehistory and Hunter-Gatherer SocietiesThis section will cover Archaeological techniques and human activity during the Paleolithic Era.Week 2Lesson 2The Neolithic EraThis section will cover the development of agriculture and establishment of permanent settlements.Week 3Lesson 3Early Civilizations in MesopotamiaThis section will cover the transition from small settlements into greater civilizations in the fertile crescent region.Week 4Lesson 4Cultures of MesopotamiaThis section will cover the development of Mesopotamian cultures including both polytheistic and monotheistic religious beliefs.Week 5Lesson 5Ancient Egypt and the PyramidsThis section will cover the early history of Egypt in the Old Kingdom period and the creation of the pyramids.Week 6Lesson 6Egyptian New KingdomThis section will cover the Egyptian New Kingdom period, and the Bronze Age Collapse in the Eastern Mediterranean.Week 7Lesson 7Ancient IndiaThis section will cover the development of civilization in the Indus River Valley.Week 8Lesson 8Cultures of Ancient IndiaThis section will continue to cover the development of civilization in Ancient India, and the rise of Hinduism and Buddhism.Week 9Lesson 9Early Civilizations in ChinaThis section will cover Neolithic development in China and the first Chinese Dynasties.Week 10Lesson 10The Warring States PeriodThis section will cover the later dynasties of Ancient China. We will conclude our course with an overview of Ancient Civilizations and a comparison with the needs of modern societies.

I am a licensed teacher from the state of Virginia with a Bachelor's degree in History and minors in Religious Studies and Psychology. This course will be taught according to common core standards, and in alignment with both the Virginia Department of Education and the California Department of Education's World History course requirements.

In this course we will use a variety of sources including primary sources. For an optional textbook to accompany the course students may use "Worlds Together, Worlds Apart: A History of the World from the Beginnings of Humankind to the Present" by Adelman, Pollard, Rosenberg, and Tignor.
