Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 4 - 5
In this ongoing class, you will learn how to draw information from fiction, poetry and non-fiction texts. You'll recap your knowledge of the different parts of a sentence and will apply that knowledge in your own writing. You'll learn how to correctly construct sentences, including when you need to use colons, semi-colons, or bullet points. You will read a range of short stories and texts which will be discussed and analysed in detail and you will then be able to construct and write both formal and informal texts and stories of your own. Your vocabulary will grow as you learn and begin to use words that have 'silent' letters (such as knight, psalm or solemn). You'll continue to use full stops, commas, apostrophes, question marks and exclamation marks correctly alongside learning a variety of other things you need to know to make your writing absolutely amazing!

*Please note, this is NOT a beginner English class. You should be able to read age-appropriate texts with a degree of fluency and be able to attempt to read words which may be unfamiliar to you.

Week beginning 24/6/23 and 4th September 2023: In this lesson, we will look at how news reports are constructed (headlines, sub-headings, columns, pictures and reporter name) and who the target audience is. You will learn the difference between facts and opinions. You will then create your own front-page report about something you have seen in the news recently, using the correct layout, spelling (you will use a dictionary to help you with this) and punctuation. Spellings to be included in this task will be: according; individual; environment, and marvellous.

Week beginning 1/7/23 and 11th September 2023: You will complete a worksheet showing you know the difference between verbs and nouns. Then we will learn about how we infer meaning from things we see, hear and read. We will read a short extract from Peter Pan and you will answer questions by finding evidence from the text to support your opinions about the various characters in the story.

Week beginning 8/7/23 and 19/9/23: Comprehension. You will read a (funny) letter written by someone whose birthday party went slightly wrong. We will talk about what tone of voice would be appropriate when reading the story - is the boy being sarcastic or is he just disappointed by events? We will look at the meaning of some of the words in context, predict what might happen next and make inferences from the story. You will then write your own version of a letter of complaint using the same techniques, choosing from one of the following ideas: a present you received but didn't want, a trip to the dentist or a broken toy. Spelling words to include in your letter will be, awkward, bruise, exaggerate, frequently and sacrifice.

Week beginning 15/7/23 and 26/9/23: Poetry. You will look at various forms of poetry and try your hand at writing either a shape poem or a haiku on the theme of Autumn (the Fall). Spelling words this week will be, autumn, colours, foliage, hedgerows and chestnuts.

In the following weeks, we will continue to grow your comprehension skills, your spelling skills, your inference skills and your writing skills. You will read and study short stories, limericks and poetry, persuasive writing, onomatopoeia, alliteration, personification, metaphors, and similes.

I have more years of experience than I care to think about (!) in delivering English to children from primary age, right through to young adults. I have taught many young adults who failed to pass their English GCSE in school to gain the almost equivalent Functional Skills English qualification after they have left school.

This is a topic I am extremely passionate about - literacy skills are a vital necessity in life. If a person can read, they can learn. If they can read, they can write. If they know the rules for grammar and punctuation, they can write well! If the classes are fun, they learn even more. These classes are fun!

Outside of Outschool, I also work as a proofreader for students at two local universities and as an editor for authors of both fiction and non-fiction books. I am also a published author.
