Students will learn about the contributions of African Americans from the American Revolution through the Civil War to Emancipation to the Civil Rights Movement.  Grade 4 students will study the influence of African American scholars, activists, and artists on themed American institutions. 

Please note, this class is 1 of a 6 part grade level series from Culture Corner Academy. Each class provides a full year of instruction. After completion of Part 1 a private registration link will be given to returning families who wish to move on to Part 2. Each grade level provides more in depth or different material. Ages are flexible, however please attempt to keep kids within 1 year of the age range for socialization purposes.

Welcome to Culture Corner Academy! The ULTIMATE interactive FLEX experience! Upon enrollment get access to our virtual school. Each week enter a different area of the school to learn your tasks for the week. All weeks are posted in the platform so you can work at your own pace. Work ahead, take your time, the choice is yours! We also will host fun interactive games and activities  including:

-Create Your Own Lunch Tray in the Cafeteria! (virtually)

Flexible Schedule Information : This flexible schedule class will mirror the live class offered with a few difference due to its flexible schedule. This class will be hosted by me on a various 3rd party sites to help build engagement through out the semester. The class will mainly be ran through an interactive site called Genially.  Learners will then be able to self direct their learning by completing different tasks set out. Examples of these would be direct instruction/lecture (by me recorded with slides using Canva and ED puzzle), supplemental videos via Youtube or a other site, discussion questions which should be answered via the Outschool classroom, Warm Up/Ice Breaker Questions using Padlet. Account creation is not required for any of these 3rd party materials. Direct instruction lessons via Ed puzzle will contain check for understanding questions throughout. 

Fall Semester (PART 1)

Week 1-4: African American Influence and Figures in Activism during the Civil Rights Movement | Black Panther Party & Seniors Against a Fearful Environment (SAFE)

-Students will learn about the life and legacy of Julian Bond who was a prominent civil rights activist 
-Students will learn about the life and legacy of Martin Luther King JR and his adoption of nonviolent resistance to achieve equal rights for Black Americans 
-Students will learn about the life and legacy of Malcolm X who championed the rights of African Americans and urged them to develop racial unity. 
-Students will learn about the life and legacy of Angela Davis who is an American political activist and author. 
-Students will learn about Harry T. and Harriette Moore, a Florida couple active in the civil rights movement, paid the ultimate price for the freedoms of their community. 
-Students will learn about a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance, James Weldon Johnson who was a man of many talents. 
-Students will learn about Roy Wilkins, who spent more than four decades at NAACP and held the top job at the civil rights organization for 22 years, beginning in 1955.
-Students will learn about Medgar Evers who heroically spoke out against racism in the deeply divided South. He fought against cruel Jim Crow laws, protested segregation in education, and launched an investigation into the Emmett Till lynching
-Students will learn about Rosa Parks, who, occupies an iconic status in the civil rights movement after she refused to vacate a seat on a bus in favor of a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama.


Week 4-8: African American Influence and Figures in the Education System |  United Negro College Fund & HBCU's

-Students will learn about the life and legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois. A founding member of NAACP and one of the foremost Black intellectuals of his era.
-Students will learn about the first general counsel of NAACP, Charles Hamilton Houston who exposed the hollowness of the "separate but equal" doctrine and paved the way for the Supreme Court ruling outlawing school segregation.
-Students will learn about the life and legacies of Fanny Coppin, Mary Bethune, Booker T Washington. 
-Students will learn about Historically African American Colleges and Universities : Their origin and culture, past and present. 
-Students will learn about the life and legacies of Anna Julia Cooper, Nathan Hare, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marva Collins
-Students will learn about the history of education structure and laws in the United States from the 19th century 
-Students will learn about the impact of Rosenwald Schools


Week 8-12 : African American Influence and Figures in the Legal System | NAACP 

-Students will learn about Plessy v. Ferguson , a Supreme Court case decided on May 18, 1896. In a 7-1 decision, racial segregation was upheld as constitutional and set the stage for . 
-Students will learn about the life and legacy of  Thurgood Marshall who was one of America's foremost attorneys. 
-Students will learn about Jim Crow laws, which were a series of laws that formally legalized discrimination against African Americans.
-Students will learn about "Where Did the Term "Jim Crow" Originate From?"
-Jim Crow laws affected nearly every aspect of life in the South. We will look at 5-7 examples in class.
-Students will learn how Jim Crow laws had their origins in the Black Codes.  Black Codes were introduced after the ratification of the 13th Amendment - the amendment that abolished slavery. 
-Learners will learn about Ida B. Wells , a prominent journalist who fought against lynching and Jim Crow laws.


Spring Semester (PART 2/New Registration)
*New private registration will be given for spring semester for those who complete Part 1 in the fall*

Week 1-4 :  African American Influence in Medicine | The National Medical Association National Urban League

-Students will learn about the life and contributions of James Durham.
-Students will learn about the life and contributions of James McCune Smith, M.D.,  the first Black American to practice in the United States with a medical degree
-Students will learn about Rebecca Lee Crumpler, M.D., the first Black woman physician in the United States 
-Students will watch an age appropriate video about the Tuskegee Experiment through Crash Course 
-Students will learn about The Spirometer, a common medical device in use around the world today, also tells a story of racial difference. It measures lung capacity, and was used during the American Civil War to study the bodies of Union soldier. 
-Students will learn how Howard University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., began its first series of classes to become the first program in the United States to open its doors to medical students of all races, genders and social classes.
-Students will learn about Henrietta Lacks, a 30-year-old African American woman, was diagnosed in hospital with an aggressive form of cervical cancer. She was killed by the disease, but the cancer cells lived on.
- Student will learn about Dale Williams who performed one of the world’s first successful heart surgeries

Week 4-8:  African American Influence and Figures in Inventions and Science | National Urban League 

-Students will learn about the Home Security System, Co-Invented by Mary Van Brittan Brown in 1966
-Students will learn about Refrigerated Trucks, Invented by Frederick McKinley Jones in 1940
-Students will learn about Automatic Elevator Doors, Invented by Alexander Miles in 1887
-The light bulb itself was perfected by Thomas Edison, but the innovation used to create longer-lasting light bulbs with a carbon filament came from African American inventor Lewis Latimer.
-Color IBM PC Monitor and Gigahertz Chip, Co-Invented by Mark Dean c. 1980 and 1999


Week 8-12 : African American Influence in Breaking Barriers in Sports | Negro Leagues 

-Students will learn about the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson 
-Students will learn about the country's first major Black filmmaker, Oscar Micheaux , who directed and produced 44 films over the course of his career. 
-Students will learn about Muhammad Ali one of the the greatest athletes of the 20th century because of his boxing prowess and social impact.
-Students will learn about, Jesse Owens who was widely considered the greatest track and field athlete in history.
-Students will learn about the “Galveston Giant,” Jack Johnson lived his life fearlessly as one of the most famous and scandalous Black athletes in America.
-Students will view the movie "Remember the Titans" and complete a follow along worksheet for their end of year activity. Parent permission is required. Those not watching the film will be given a supplemental activity. 
-Students will learn about Fritz Pollard and Bobby Marshall  who became the first African American players allowed to play in the National Football League.
-Students will learn about Charlie Sifford, who’s been referred to as the Jackie Robinson of golf.
