Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 5
In this 6-week Zelda-themed creative writing class, learners will bring to life their own world and characters based on the Kingdom of Hyrule and lore from the Legend of Zelda world. Lessons are made up of discussions and idea sharing, stand-alone activities, and longer independent writing assignments. Children are encouraged to share their writing with their classmates however this isn't compulsory.

Week 1 - Character Building
Students will focus on how to build a character from scratch based on the different races in Hyrule. This will be the hero of their story!
Homework: Create a character profile for their main character.

Week 2 - Awesome Description
Students can share their character profiles. This week we are focusing on what makes an interesting description and how to write something captivating! We'll do Zelda-themed activities to test our imagination skills and vocabulary.
Homework: Write a passage describing the villain of the story.

Week 3 - Building Worlds and Settings
After sharing their homework assignments, learners will explore the different landscapes of Hyrule and have a go at creating their own descriptions for them.
Homework: Complete a final setting description for their story using concepts learnt in the lesson.

Week 4 - Themes
The Zelda Universe is an epic fantasy place and therefore learners can have fun with the differing themes in their story! The theme chosen for Tears of the Kingdom is "hands" oddly enough! We'll talk about this theme in the context of the story, and children will brainstorm alternative themes that could be used in their own story.

Week 5 - Putting it All Together!
This week we're going to have a go at writing a story! We'll put all the skills we've learnt so far into practice and start to write our story!
Homework: Finish story writing (if not completed within the lesson).

Week 6 - Story Sharing!
This week is focused on sharing all the fantastic work we've created over our 6-week course! There'll be plenty of discussion and opportunity to go over everything we've written together!
Learning Goals
Learners will improve their understanding of 6 key concepts in creative writing: character building, imaginative descriptions, scene setting, story themes, structuring a story and sentence fluency.

Parental Guidance
Combat in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom isn't graphic, but it can still be intense and dramatic, especially during some boss fights. Combat is presented from a third-person perspective and involves standard fantasy elements such as swords, shields, axes, bows and arrows, explosives, and elemental magic. Link fights monsters similar to goblins, ogres, and fairies. No blood or gore, though the animals Link hunts for food turn into raw, red steaks.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Non-US Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I qualified as a teacher in July 2015 and began working as a supply teacher immediately to gain as much experience in the field as possible.
After securing a permanent job in April 2016, I worked with a range of year groups from ages 4-16. I was required to plan for progression and needed to ensure the social and emotional well-being of my children.

Since 2018, I have worked as a private tutor both in person and online. I now would love to branch out, with the help of Outschool, to creating gaming social clubs which will provide a safe space for young people to be online while learning and meeting like-minded people.

I always try to make teaching as fun as possible and truly believe the best way to learn is by developing an enthusiasm for the subject, which can only come through fun!
