US Grade 1 - 3
In this workshop series, we focus on nurturing your child's ability to construct strong sentences. These classes offer weekly prompts, allowing your child to join at any time without worrying about a predetermined starting point. If you need assistance in selecting the appropriate class level for your learner or if the scheduled times don't suit your availability, feel free to reach out to me directly. ✏️ Level 1: Writing Sentences (Ongoing) - Master the fundamentals of writing complete sentences. ⬅️ This class! ✏️ Level 2: Writing Super Sentences (Ongoing) - Elevate sentence construction with detailed and engaging writing. ⬅️ https://outschool.com/classes/young-writers-workshop-level-2-writing-super-sentences-6gyXsiP2 CLASS GOALS: In this ongoing class, your young writer will build confidence in writing a variety of simple sentences. Each week, they will write a sentence using different writing prompts, including sentence frames, seasonal words, narrative, illustration, and opinion-based prompts. PREREQUISITES: 1. Your child should already know how to write words by sounding them out phonetically. Inventive spelling will be honored since our focus is on learning the structure of a sentence. Students will be encouraged and supported as they sound out words phonetically if they are not sure of the correct spelling. 2. A basic understanding of sentence structure is recommended. We will briefly review this at the beginning of each class. CLASS STRUCTURE: 1. Review the essential components of a sentence (naming part, telling part, capital letter, punctuation, and making grammatical sense). 2. Teacher models how to write a sentence for that day's writing prompt. 3. Guided practice as students brainstorm and write their own sentences. 4. Optional sharing of completed work at the end of class (read it aloud and/or hold it up to the camera). MATERIALS NEEDED: For each class, your child will need a pencil with an eraser and the week's writing worksheet (or any paper they have at home). I will post the worksheet in the Outschool classroom 23 hours before class. A stuffed animal writing buddy is also welcome! WEEKLY PROMPTS (listed by "week of"): ✏️ November 11 - SEASONAL WORD SENTENCE: Students will practice writing a sentence that includes a seasonal word (e.g., leaves, chill, hike). ✏️ November 18 - NARRATIVE SENTENCE: Students will draw a picture in response to a prompt (e.g., "What did you do over the weekend?") and then write a sentence about their drawing. ✏️ December 2 - ILLUSTRATION SENTENCE: After looking at a picture, students will write a sentence to tell what is happening in the picture. ✏️ December 9 - OPINION SENTENCE: Given two choices, students will choose "this or that" and write a sentence to explain why. ✏️ December 16 - SENTENCE FRAME: Students will practice writing a sentence with a sentence frame. For example, "I _____ at the park." [More writing prompts for January-May will be posted as we get closer to those months.] RELATED CLASSES: For spelling practice, check out my classes available for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. When your child is ready to expand simple sentences with more details, consider my Young Writer's Workshop Level 2: Writing Super Sentences class. ➡️ https://outschool.com/classes/young-writers-workshop-level-2-writing-super-sentences-6gyXsiP2 ⬅️ CLASS POLICIES ----------------- LATE ARRIVALS: I understand that sometimes your child may need to arrive late to class. Please remind your child to sign on quietly without interrupting class to respect the teacher and those who are already in class. I will greet your child when there is a natural stop in whatever we are doing at the time and involve them in the class. MISSED CLASS: Since this is a weekly class, enrolling saves a spot for your child for the whole week and you will still receive the week's materials. No other student may pay for or fill that spot for that week. Sometimes students have to miss one of the days for various reasons, but there is no refund for those missed days. The class recording will be available so that your child can watch the playback. Or, with advanced notice, I am happy to transfer your child to another section meeting that same week. The other option is to pause your subscription for the week (must be done by the Sunday of the week of class to avoid being charged for the week).
