Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
YOUNG WRITER'S WORKSHOP SERIES WITH COURTNEY M.: This series of classes is designed to help your young writer build and maintain a strong foundation in writing strong sentences. With the exception of the one-time Introduction to Writing Sentences class, the ongoing classes feature a new prompt each week so your child may join at any time. Within each level, there is no beginning or starting point.

If you need help choosing the best-fit level class for your learner, or if you do not see a time that works for your schedule, please send me a message.

✏️ Level 1: Writing Sentences (Ongoing) - learn about and practice writing complete sentences ⬅️ https://outschool.com/classes/young-writers-workshop-level-1-writing-sentences-0ZQZK7UE
✏️ Level 2: Writing Super Sentences (Ongoing) - learn and practice writing complete and detailed sentences ⬅️ This class!

CLASS GOALS: In this ongoing class, your young writer will build confidence in writing longer, more detailed sentences. Each week, we will write a super sentence using different writing activities (e.g., question words, conjunctions, combining sentences, seasonal word bank, ...).

PREREQUISITES:
1. Your child should already know how to write words by sounding them out phonetically. Inventive spelling will be honored since our focus is on learning the structure of a sentence. Students will be encouraged and supported as they sound out words phonetically if they are not sure of the correct spelling.
2. Your child should be comfortable writing simple sentences with a naming part, telling part, capital letter, punctuation, and grammatical sense. If your child needs more practice with writing simple sentences, please try my Level 1 introduction or ongoing sentence writing workshop. This Level 2 class focuses on expanding simple sentences to write longer, more detailed sentences.

IN CLASS:
1. At the beginning of each class, we will review a checklist of the important parts of a sentence (naming part, telling part, capital letter, punctuation, and makes grammatical sense).
2. Then I will model how to write a sentence for that day's writing activity (e.g., using question words, conjunctions, combining sentences, seasonal word bank, ...).
3. Next, each student will write their own super sentence with teacher support, as needed.
4. Students will have an opportunity to share their writing at the end of class if they would like to read it aloud and/or hold it up to the camera.

MATERIALS NEEDED: For each class, your child will need a pencil with an eraser and the week's writing worksheet(s). I will post the worksheet(s) in the Outschool classroom 23 hours before class. Alternatively, your child may use whatever writing paper you have at home. Worksheets will be displayed on the screen during the class, as well. Your child is welcome to bring a stuffed animal writing buddy with them to class.

CLASS POLICIES
-----------------
LATE ARRIVALS: I understand that sometimes your child may need to arrive late to class. Please remind your child to sign on quietly without interrupting class to respect the teacher and those who are already in class. I will greet your child when there is a natural stop in whatever we are doing at the time and involve them in the class.

MISSED CLASS: Since this is a weekly class, enrolling saves a spot for your child for the whole week and you will still receive the week's materials. No other student may pay for or fill that spot for that week. Sometimes students have to miss one of the days for various reasons, but there is no refund for those missed days. Please send me a message if you would like me to share the class recording for a missed class so that your child can watch the playback. Or, with advanced notice, I am happy to transfer your child to another section meeting that same week. The other option is to pause your subscription for the week (must be done by the Sunday of the week of class to avoid being charged for the week).
