Class Experience
(Scheduling is flexible. If you can't find a section that works for you, feel free to request a different time.) In this introductory 1-on-1 reading tutoring class, students will receive individualized instruction based on their needs. Initially, I will assess students to determine their skill levels. These results will determine what I teach in future courses. This class is set up as a screener, not an in-depth or official evaluation. The data I collect is used to develop an on-going tutoring program for each student. This is the basic setup for the class: 1) Phonics screener: This assessment will help me determine what gaps students have in their sound/word recognition. For young students, I will also test them on word reading ability and phoneme segmenting. 2) Fluency assessment: Kids will read a leveled-passage for a minute. I will monitor for correct words per minute (fluency and accuracy). We will do this a few times until we find their correct reading level. 3) Echo read: I will introduce a book on their specific level and get them ready to read it. I will read paragraphs and then they will read the same paragraphs after me. This will get them prepared to read on their own. 4) Independent read: The students will take over reading the book. I will help them with errors and ask comprehension questions throughout. This format gives students instruction on phonics, word reading, fluency, and comprehension which are essential literacy skills. Throughout this class, I will provide corrective feedback in a kind and helpful way to provide an environment where students feel comfortable and safe to make mistakes and learn. I want them to know that it's okay if we struggle because that is a great way to learn. But I also want to provide them with moments of success so they don't get frustrated and shut down. This is an introductory course, meaning the assessments are used for future tutoring sessions, not as comprehensive evaluations. I do not provide DRA or guided reading scores, but the data I collect give parents a general idea of student reading levels and helps them see some of the gaps their students have in their literacy skills. After this course is complete, we can schedule future 1-on-1 sessions to continue learning.
Learning Goals
Students will develop essential reading skills: sight word reading, phonics, fluency, spelling, and comprehension.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings, my fellow humans. My name is Daniel Roueche (rhymes with touché). I'm what you would call a nerd. I love movies, reading, writing, dreaming, imagining, visualizing, and all that jazz. If there's a story, I'm interested! I have been an elementary special education teacher for the past 4 years, teaching kids with a variety of disabilities. My main focus has and will always be to teach students literacy skills, and more importantly, to develop a lifelong love of reading and writing. Through my years teaching special education, I have enjoyed figuring out the best way to teach each student because I know all students can learn even if they learn differently than others. And I feel, no, I know that literacy skills are essential tools for all students to succeed in school and in life. As such, I want to create an online classroom that focuses on each student. I want to teach courses that help struggling readers and writers develop these basic skills all while finding joy in the process. These include teaching the basics for reading: phonics, fluency, comprehension, by using high interest, low level books. And even some creative writing courses that focus on grammar, organization, and content.
